What the hell is a Blogger and what does the word Blogger mean?

What the hell is a blogger and what does the word blogger mean? If you have never heard the term 'Blogger', I want to welcome you from the rock you've been under. The Internet is home to millions of bloggers, but what exactly does that mean? What does the word Blogger mean, and what the hell is a blogger anyway? Allow me to clear this up for you.

Dictionary.com defines the word 'blogger' as a person who keeps a web log (blog) or publishes an online diary, and that defines it pretty well but doesn't help one to understand what blogging is all about, nor answer the question “what is a blog?” or why people write blogs.

I'm a blogger. I write articles like this one and post them to my web site, which happens to be considered a blog. The frequency of updates coupled with a visitors ability to comment on the individual articles makes my web site a blog.

If my site was no different than a brochure for products and services, then I couldn't really call my site a blog, it would be a 'web site'.

The term blog is short for web log. Back when the Internet was just starting to become a household term, some smart people decided (correctly) that there would be many people who would like to keep a diary online. These online diaries allowed individuals to write entries into their online diary in an easy and convenient manner. The term blog is the slang term of the words web log, which is nothing more than an online diary.

Online diaries quickly caught fire and years later, the Internet sees thousands of new blogs being created each day, if not each hour.

The person that authors work to an online diary is known as a blogger. That's right, it's a big, fat noun.

So, no more asking what the hell a blogger is because you should now know what the word 'blogger' means.

Ha, nice. I believe that. Happy Easter to you too!

  2. Garret says:

I love my blogs. Personally I like the meaning of blog I read awhile back, sorry I don’t remember where I read it or I would give kudo’s but blog means:

    Better
    Listing
    On
    Google

    It seems to fit :)

    Happy Easter everyone :)

Kristy, I would imagine running a blog speaks volumes for oneself. Especially if you’re able to share it with potential employers! haha

Manz, oh jeez…where to begin. I’ve varied tastes much like yourself. One problem I’m having now is getting to anyone’s blog. I’m buried in work, emails, clients, websites and this blog lately, and hope to change that with the April challenge. I need some time back to enjoy reading everyones blogs again.

I find time here and there, but not like I used to. I used to be able to make it to about 20 blogs a day. Now it’s just not possible to actually read, comprehend and comment like I want to.

    That will change tho…

    Thanks for asking!

People are not as private as they once were… I kept a diary as a teenager and would have turned red had anyone read it!!

I think alot of blogs are more “edited” forms of a diary (not all of course)… however, they do allow that individual to write all about the things they are most passionate about.

I personally follow blogs about: web development / social media; Art and Photography / Movies, music and entertainment / some food stuff. What about you Wayne… what “categories” do you like?

  5. Kikolani says:

I have some people who give me a bit of a confused look when I say blogger. But I have also encountered people who take that as a really awesome thing. A client at my work asked if I had a degree in English, and I answered that I didn’t, but I was a blogger. He was satisfied that being a blogger was just as good as having a degree, and asked if I would do some writing for his company.

  6. I guess the reason for the popularity in blogs is the idea of reading someones diary with their permission

  7. Wayne says:

Many people are, and I’ve been doing my homework on it so I can present some good information. :) It’s coming.

  8. Carolyn says:

April Foools is overrated anyway, lol.
Actually, I am interested in learning more about key phrases so I can draw more attention to my blog.

  9. Wayne says:

Thank you both. Blogging has helped me in a number of ways that I never expected too. Who’da thunk?

This is a post where I’m targeting a few key phrases, both found in the title. I’m preparing to show a method of generating search traffic for your blog. I need to give this a little time to gauge the effectiveness of my effort. I have a few others around here. You can usually identify them by the title asking a specific question. :)

I was going to create an April Fools thing, but decided not to. Not enough time to be that creative.

  10. Holte Ender says:

Some blogs are “must read” especially if you are a novice (like me) yours is one of those.

  11. Carolyn says:

Wayne, I like your style. I think it’s crazy how people have gone crazy over reading other “online diaries”. Who would have thought?
