Well, I took a little time today to make a few minor changes. most notably is the header area where I ditched the old blue background where my name is to replace it with a more seasonal, yet distressed looking image. There’s leaves there, it’s fall, I’m in tune with the season a bit.
I also found a random image control for BlogEngine, so I decided to change up the header on the homepage a bit with a fresh look and some random images from my personal collection. Since I didn’t want to be bothered with resizing all the images, I found another way to do that in a snap.
If you happen to use Picasa (I have version 2.7, you can download version 3 here), you can easily select the images in the Picasa interface, and then hit File – Export Picture to Folder. The following dialog will display, and you simply set the default size you want the pictures to be. Once you hit ok, Picasa will cycle through all the images you selected and dump them into a folder you specify.
I’m quite pleased with the end result as nearly all of the images that exported were less than 10kb each.
As you might already know, the smaller images take less time to download, so the interface they are being displayed on will be more snappy.
Soon I’ll have a photo gallery page built that will contain all my personal photos. After looking at all the various photo sharing services out there, I still feel better off going it alone here under the waynejohn.com banner.

I try to not be annoying…being naturally annoying one needs to recognize this and tone it down a bit. I think I’m doing well with it. lol
Thank you for not annoying. I tried the picture thing and failed miserably, so I’m just going to be plain Karen
Go for it Gary! Have fun with it!
Indian, I do! One I choose to display or not, the other at the end of each post.
If you are asking why I don’t have adsense everywhere, well that would be due to annoying factor it brings.
Why don’t you have adsense. Regards
well I have used the provided link and have installed Picassa vesion 3.o (beta) on my machine—will now have to go away and figure out how to use it, in relation to posting pics on my blog page.
Thanks guys! Glad it wasn’t my usual graphics change dilemma’s where it simply doesn’t look good. Thank to whomever for that extra hour to get it right…lol
I think what I like most about Picasa is that you get a client tool that you can use to organize and manipulate your photos. Seems like a well rounded tool for general maintenance and such.
I can’t wait to get my gallery going either, I’m considering using a lightbox component for the whole thing…we’ll see what happens.
Ditto on the leaves and the random image changes.
I’m glad you mentioned Picasa. I use Picasa3 regularly and find that it does probably 98% of what I need as far as image editing. And it is extremely easy to use. Of course I don’t do much heavy-duty editing, but I think Picasa is great for the average point-and-shoot photographer. It is amazing how much just 2-3 clicks can improve many photo’s. I generally resize the ones I’m going to use on the blog to either 800 or 1024 pixels. I realize I’m taking a big hit on the size and speed, but with many of them I want the visitor to be able to easily view them in a larger size if they want to and generally 800 just about fills up a screen.
I’m looking forward to hearing about your photo gallery efforts and results. I have recently been trying to think of ways to promote my slideshows a bit more on the blog. Actually your slideshow (which was cool by the way) in your Halloween post gave me an idea for doing that.
I like the leaves in your banner, they tie in nicely with the background colour of your page.
I also like the random image changes, they somehow add a touch of extra personality to the your pages.
Good choices of change.
