Splitting lanes with a motorcycle down Southern California’s 405 freeway

Aside from this guy being a complete idiot while riding his motorcycle down Southern California’s infamous 405 freeway in rush hour traffic, it reminds me how much I miss riding.

I used to ride to and from work every day.  It was fun…especially since I worked about 30 miles from home.  It guaranteed me a nice ride each day…nice being relative of course.  Riding in Southern California traffic isn’t for the faint of heart.

I feel free when I’m on a bike, and if you have never ridden a motorcycle, you won’t understand the feeling. There’s no way to describe it other than having a growing love for the road and finding out what’s beyond the next mile. I miss that wanderlust feeling.

The guy that made this video however isn’t the smartest of riders.  In fact, he would piss off nearly every other biker out there along with those in their cages (car).  He gives bikers a bad name. I lost count at the number of violations he racked up on this single ride home, which make me wonder…will he get a call from the cops because of this video?  Could he?

I wonder exactly how long this video will be up because of that.

Splitting lanes is legal in California. The reasoning I hear is that motorcycles need the wind to keep their engines cool, and with Southern California traffic being so congested as times, motorcycles can split lanes to keep the wind cooling the engine.

Not sure if that’s factual or not…but I think if there was a chance of a motorcycle engine stalling in rush hour traffic…that’s not something I’d want to happen.

Enjoy your Friday people, and keep an eye out for people like this. There is nothing worse than seeing a biker go down.

Do you ride?

I honestly love most things about living in Southern California, but the 405 freeway is one that will never be on my list. The 405 is horrible. I always envy motorcycles that zoom by as I’m sitting in my “cage.”

  2. I think it is a terrible idea, 405 is very much horrifying. Thanks for the share!

Love it Wayne…I live in North Yorkshire in the UK which is perfect bike country, narrow undulating twisting lanes that go on forever. It’s an early morning treat though as the cops are well hot for bikers. So as long as your out at the crack of dawn you can forget traffic -it’s only the sheep you’ve got to keep your eyes peeled for – those woolys can really bring you down quick!!

So sorry to hear you miss your bike, maybe it’s time to polish off those leathers, we only get one life and baby we were born to ride ;o)

    Love the cage reference too,

    Dave.

  4. I imagine a “green-line” type of train going up the center of the 405 freeway from at least Mission Viejo, through to LAX. The 405 freeway is terrible most of the time. Get rid of the NB and SB carpool lanes and stick in a NB/SB train. I know it would not be easy, but I think that is the worst freeway in general in Socal. Do not “add” any more lanes!

Anyone living in this area has probably already spotted this clown and could therefore report him. I think it might be in the interest of the motorcyclist as well as other drivers if perhaps he was arrested. Scary.

I hate traffic jam on rush hours. Even if I love the confort of a “cage”, when I see how fast a biker is going on road, I have some second thoughts about trading this confort with a risky bike.

Dude, that’s insanse!! Still, I can kinda get the thrill, if the gene pool didn’t have these guys we’d have no fighter pilots! Better train that guy and give him a plane – we’ve still got a job to do.

    Trav.

“Can motorcycle riders “split” lanes and ride between other vehicles?
Lane splitting by motorcycles is permissible but must be done in a safe and prudent manner.”

now is this safe… i would say no… but he can do it in CA

      Edward, good link, thanks.

The best thing about splitting lanes, from my personal experience, is when you have a tailgater on you…popping up one vehicle can at least make one feel a bit more safe. But splitting lanes is pretty dangerous still.

      Cheers Edward!

Let’s assume….hmm, er…speculate that EVERYONE is driving that stretch on the 405 on “full alert” after an exhausting day at work and that they have their heads out of their asses. While we’re at it…let’s ask for world peace ‘cuz both cases will NEVER happen.

This biker is speculating that everyone is paying attention to their driving and will see him in the 1 – 1.5 seconds in which he appears in the “caged” driver’s rear view mirrors and that he will not get unintentionally cut-off. But, no. Thanks to drivers on cell phones, texting, Mom’s referee-ing brats in the back seat and the doorknobs that take pics w/their cells of the “cool”cars on the road and any other possible road hazard scenario that I left out, this dude’s bike riding days are numbered.

Thrilling video.I felt like I am watching some video game in front rear view.To do that kind of stuff you need a lot of expertise. It you get through correctly with these kind of things then it looks great otherwise it can prove dangerous.Besides in many countries such kind of act are not permissible.

  11. Chuck261 says:

Well he is batshit crazy!!!!!!!!!!! I had to make the pinky promise of no lane splitting to get my bike. The only question is when are you getting yours?????

I see a lot of these guys on crotch-rockets doing this in a crazy way too. Cruisers seem to be more elegant about it imo…not so vroom! vroom! about it.

Maybe this Christmas I’ll get mine. We’ll hook up and do Joshua Tree, what ya say?

  12. Jasmine says:

Completely agree with ZZYZX. There is no way that this moron will be doing this much longer. And I’ll admit, it was cool to watch, but this guy needs a reality check. GL on gettn your bike at Christmas!

  13. Fred from Internet Business says:

That’s crazy! I have a friend who used to post videos like that of himself on his bike but I think he also was worried about being charged with speeding and reckless driving so he took them down.

  14. Michael says:

Hi I am a new rider and just was looking for clarification.

You say “I lost count at the number of violations he racked up on this single ride home,” what are those violations? What was he doing that was a violation besides speeding?

    Thank You

I’d say there was a bit of recklessness, and crossing the solid white line on the freeway is a no-no. I know, I’ve been popped for that. :)

Splitting lanes is illegal in most other states, but not here in California.

      Ride safe!

  15. AB from folding bike reviews says:

    Hi Wayne!

Like the video. I don’t ride a bike myself, but like to check out stuff on youtube. Myself i am to much of a coward too ride a bike like that. I’ll stick to my car, think i am safer that way.

Btw have you seen the swedish guy called “ghostrider”. A total maniac but fun to watch.
