If you have visited WayneJohn.com recently, you might have noticed that I’ve made a few changes to my site; namely the header and footer area. It’s part of my own effort to give my site a look and feel that I think fits and will be useful. I’m taking a slow approach to re-designing my site, since I really don’t want to pop some existing template in place and deal with the nuances that might come with that. I’ve been there and done that too many times. I feel a special connection to my own blog, as I should, so I want something different, unique and something that I have put together that I can be proud of.
I want something that will:
- Help to convey who I am and what I’m all about – Videos, overall theme design, better posts relating to what I do and how I do it
- Help me promote the services I offer to others – Front page exposure of my services and products
- Look nice and is easy on the eyes – Aesthetics will help make a good first impression
- Aesthetically appeal to a majority of people that frequent my site – Visitor retention and stickiness
While I can attempt to achieve all those points, what I’m truly after here is originality, and digging my teeth even deeper into Thesis. I have a new toy, and it’s a fun toy. I also want to explore my creative side more, something that I’ve neglected in favor of more logic-based pursuits.
So over the course of the next month, perhaps two (hell, it could be even longer than that!), I’m going to make changes to my theme, design and layout as I have time. I’m also working with several clients right now, so of course everything else is taking a back seat while I work on things for others. It’s also why the posts here are so erratic at times. You can tell when I’m available for hire because the posts are coming each day. It’s just how it is, and I’m just now beginning to realize the amount of pressure that I used to place on myself because I wasn’t posting every day. But, I digress…
So my approach to changing my blog theme is going to be different than most others. Usually, you’ll pop on a site and find it to be completely different because the authors have been squirreling themselves away creating something that no one will see until they deploy the entire thing. Normally, I’ll do that too…but not this time.
I’m taking a “show it as it goes” approach for a few reasons:
- I can get instant feedback from a wider audience on the smaller parts of the site. For instance, if I change the colors on the titles, I could ask people what they thought about that one particular element. I can’t really get that granular when everything is suddenly new…not without asking for more time than I believe people would actually want to spend.
- There are those of you that have asked me questions about web development that have led me to believe that if I show the slow progression of changing my site that they will learn from it. I like that.
- I don’t want to bake anything in the backroom for months. I don’t have time, and this is something that if I shove it out there, I will force myself to find time to get it done. Otherwise, it’s prone to falling into that lethargic area of non-committal where things don’t get done.
Of course the risk here is that I’ll get feedback that addresses something that I just haven’t got to yet.
So what’s done so far?
The header and footers have taken on a new look. The header image, my logo, was designed by a really good friend of mine whom I will later disclose in a post to give him and his business proper kudos and thanks. It’s the same type of graphic that appears on my business cards and letterhead. It just makes more sense to roll with the existing branding I’ve had done for my business.
To me, it screams technical. I like the way it looks, and I’ve always been fond of the color green and blue, so it fits my tastes.
The black with green text is nice, but I know it’s hard to read. At least, it’s hard on the eyes, so I’ll probably modify that a bit to give the text better readability.
I think I’ve found a nice font combination as well. The titles are Palantino (use firebug to check what they are today, lol), while the main body text is Georgia (again, check with firebug). I think it makes things easy for readers to consume, which will leave my actual writing to focus on to improve the readability even more.
What’s next?
For the past few months, I’ve been venturing around to new blogs. A lot of new blogs, some that I’ve even subscribed to. What I’m doing though is looking at what they are doing, how the are presenting themselves and picking out the elements in their design that I like and could incorporate into my own design. Inspiration is required, and there is an abundance of inspiration out there to take advantage of.
I have a ton of new ideas from doing that, and I’ll probably continue to do that as time rolls on. I want my sidebar to be more distinguished from the content, so expect to see something happen over there.
If you are looking to change any element of your site, and you don’t know what you want, go look at other sites. There are plenty of creative people out there that you can gain inspiration from, or even directly take design elements from, assuming graphical elements are not involved. No one has a monopoly on HTML and CSS.
Oh, and I’m going to tighten up the logo a bit. I see jagged edges there.
So, the next few posts might be more about the things I’m doing around here.
Please stand by while I get this stuff done…

I like your new header design. It looks kind of futuristic and it looks good on the black background.
Twitter: waynejohn
I’ve always been fond of the old green screen monitors, and that whole age of computers, Tron…lol Miss those days a bit guess.
Thanks for taking time to share your thoughts, Bjorn!

Grey on green doesn’t work, if you don’t see it yet: https://skitch.com/ariherzog/rs5m7/grey-on-green

Yeah, had to work my way down to the comments. Made them readable for now. I’ll have to circle back to this tomorrow.

Nice job on your web design, it looks awesome. There are a lot of websites that have a plain white background, which makes them look dead.
Twitter: waynejohn
Thanks! I know what you mean about the white too…while it might be “a standard”, I prefer a little color I guess.
Thanks for taking the time to comment!
do you really like this green background color? and the black color of the background? honestly, a this is a little hard to read for more than a few minutes… I think a white background might look a little better, don’t you think?:D
BTW, the header is cool
photoshop rules
Twitter: waynejohn
Photoshop might rule, but I suck at it. I respect anyone that is willing to cramp their hands on that software.
I do like the green, but, I kinda see what you’re saying. I took some time to read over this post again to get an idea of the readability, and yeah, the green does interfere with reading to some degree.
I’m keeping that in mind as I continue building the design out. Thanks for being honest and sharing that.

Hi Wayne
I’ve not read the other comments… just in case they influence me.
My thoughts
I notice that you have a list of what you want your site to do.
One thing is… “Help to convey who I am and what I’m all about…. ”
I think that it’s difficult, if not impossible to work with abstract ideas like that.
Most site layouts allow you to move content, add social icons and all that sort of thing, in fact with your skills you can do that for yourself.
But I’m guessing that when it comes to images, colours, text size, you struggle.
I know I do.
That’s where the graphic designer makes such a difference.
Or, if you can’t find a good graphic designer find a few sites that you like and nudge your site in that direction.
I know that great content is a must for any site, but the overall appearance is what people see first, so the site has to get their attention.
I’ve not changed anything on my theme, because the graphics guy got it right first time.
Those are my ramblings so I’ll take a look now at the other comments.
Twitter: waynejohn
Ha, I like that raw, first impression approach! Well, I had something going with a certain someone, then it fell apart.
I certainly do struggle with all those things…part of the reason why I’m doing this is to flex what little muscle I have there in the hopes that I get that one golden moment of brilliance. This ain’t it, is it. hahahaha
This is only a first step…I might back-track on some things still. But, I do have a graphic design whom I will be calling in the morning. I’ve built up a few ideas…
I might have been a little vague with that statement also…With that I mean to change the homepage to something other than a blog roll of posts.
More to come!
Green and blue, now that’s different. I see you are wearing a green T in your thumb and probably blue socks, we’ll never know. Your blog has changed a lot since I first visited (about 2 years ago). Change is good, right. Like moving the furniture around at home, or painting the bathroom.
Twitter: waynejohn
I can be a fashion disaster for sure. I have a pair of tie-dye socks in the drawer, but I’ve yet to wear them. Maybe this summer with my bright orange-flames swim trunks.
I always enjoy switching things up. I think this is probably the 5 or 6th time in the life of this site that I’ve changed it drastically.

Love the header logo. It reminds me of the awesome Unix file system imagery they used in “Hackers”.
Altogether though I do find the theme a bit dark…But I guess the darker it is the easier on the eyes, right? I’m definitely curious to see how this evolves as you get feedback from comments and friends. I’m sure someone’s done a “watch me redesign my site in real time” kind of thing before, but this will be my the first time seeing someone do it from start to finish.
Best of luck with it!
Twitter: waynejohn
Awesome, glad you like it. I’m thinking the color scheme might appeal to those that are more the geeky, sci-fi types. I think the contrast of white and black might be a be difficult on the eyes, so I might tone down the white a bit to lessen the difference.
Heh, the problem with real time development is ensuring the site doesn’t go down. I’ve already been bitten a few times with some things that broke without my knowledge, and that isn’t good. But, it’s part of what happens when you dev this way.
I’ll be posting updates as things progress.
Cheers Kyle, awesome to have you as a reader!

Testing testing…
Oh look, yay! Your blog likes me again. =) Now that I have completely forgotten everything I said before, I’ll just say that I really like it! Everything is easy to take in at first glance, and the dark green is very easy on the eyes.
Two thumbs up!

Ok, I removed the code that was waiting for you specifically to try to comment.
I’m glad you like it! The more I work with my new design, the more I’m liking it too. Big things ahead!
The green and white makes sense. But mixing green and blue for the logo seems sorta awkward.
Twitter: waynejohn
How so?
By the way, I purposefully approved your comment, and removed the url. Please use the features provided on the page instead of just dropping whatever and expecting the comment to be approved. Homey don’t play that…

I like what you have been doing to the site and I look forward to the upcoming changes. I found your header a tad “out there” when I first saw it, and it could’ve been the green/blue thing – but overall I’m digging it. I’m a big fan of morphing and re-design. As long as I can read off a white background, I’m happy.
Twitter: waynejohn
Thanks Amy! yeah, the logo was like that for me too when I was first presented with it for my biz cards…but it grew on me. I think it fits me pretty well. Technical, logical, colorful, hahaaha.
The text on white won’t change. If anything does happen, it will be a few shades shy of pure white…if I think that works. I’m in agreement with you though, it’s hard to read otherwise.
Well, the colour green stands for nature or, in America, is a slang name for money..isn’t it? Or, either are you a supporter of enviromental issues or you want to make some money..
.
Or do you have any Irish roots?
Anyhow, I do not find the green disturbing, but the black background..
Regards,
Anna
Twitter: waynejohn
To me, the color green means a lot of things. Primarily, it’s the color of motherboards and computer cards. At least it was when I was messing around with them. I don’t really see the guts of computers anymore…nor do I really want to. haha
Environmental is not what I was going for, but I’ll quickly take that too. I’m big on doing right by the earth, although in practice I have a long way to go.
Watch for change in the black background.
It won’t remain solid if I can help it.
Twitter: vergentcom
The green is nice! Don’t change the green!
Twitter: waynejohn
I’m kinda stuck on it too. I like it too much to change anything about it now. Glad you feel the same!
I also like the green and all on this site except for the color gray font which could be difficult for others to read. This is such a very nice custom design. Nice creativity!
Twitter: waynejohn
Thanks! That gray is gone now…at least in the green where I found it hard to read. I assume you meant on the sidebar.
The design is still evolving…I’m hoping to touch up the comments area soon.
Thanks for dropping by and sharing your thoughts Anne!
Wayne,
I hoped you did something about the black, really..it is kind of scarry
.
Green goes perfect with shades of brown, orange or purple…next time I visit your blog I expect to be pleasantly surprised.
Indeed, I like the design. The color is just fine with my eyes. The header itself is perfect for overall design. Absolutely looks awesome!
Twitter: codedigitalcom
Wayne,
If you are having problems with photoshop and simply don’t enjoy the part of designing your site, why not use a ready template? There is plenty of that online and they are quite cheap. Then, you can simply edit whatever you like and have a cool website without doing the design part
If you need some help though, give me a shout and I might be able to help!
Twitter: waynejohn
Well, it’s not so much that I don’t enjoy it as I don’t enjoy the amount of time it takes to do the discovery aspect of anything creative like that. It’s a huge time-suck…finding the right colors, fonts, complementary colors, overall design and structure…sigh. No one wants to pay for the time it would take me to personally do it. I make my money making stuff do stuff, because I’m actually quite fast with that part of web development. Design, not so much. Two completely different disciplines, and I find that no one person can do REALLY well in both. It’s always one or the other.
I appreciate your offer for assistance. If I need some help, I’ll give you a shout!
Twitter: codedigitalcom
oh! and by the way, I think logo on top should be clickable. I just wanted to go back to homepage and spotted that it isn’t
Twitter: waynejohn
I decided against doing that since there is a “Home” link in the nav bar. But, perhaps I should reconsider since a lot of folk, like yourself, are used to the logo being like that.
There’s more changes forthcoming…I think you might have just added a task to my list.
haha
Twitter: codedigitalcom
One more link won’t make a difference for you, it’s a 2 minutes job, but it can make a big difference for your visitors

PS. I agree that design part is time consuming. I have just spent 15 minutes writing a php script for a web application and another 3 hours for styling it… but I enjoy every part of it
“What you wear represents what you are”. Your blog is your first impression to the world and its just right to make it right. Change is good if it;s for the better. I like green also it make me feel calm and relax.
I am relatively new to blogging so I am mostly using Word press and their free themes. Already, though I find myself tired of the same look and have considered purchasing Thesis. I believe it is worth it and probably easier to edit. However I am still undecided. By the way, I have also been looking at other blogs for some inspiration.
Twitter: waynejohn
That’s the best thing about the web, you can find nearly everything you need for inspiration. Also really good to see how people standardize particular aspects of design. Don’t want to confuse your visitors with a design that is so outside the box, unless that is your goal.
