Here’s a completely random idea for the airline industry. Many times people don’t know when they are going to fly, but they know they will need to fly sometime in the future.
Take for instance the case of a family’s daughter that is about to give birth. The family doesn’t know exactly when the child is going to pop into this world, but the family does know that as soon as it does, they will be hopping on board a plane and taking a little trip to see their new grandson or granddaughter.
This presents a problem for the family. Especially in today’s cash-tight times. All they can do is sit and wait for that day to come around, and then make the purchase for tickets.
What would be better, and would give the air of caring from airlines is if the family could give the airlines a certain amount of money for a flight to some destination in advance. The family pays in advance for an airfare that will occur sometime in the future.
When the time comes that they need to travel, they are already paid and ready, they just need to be slotted onto a plane that has enough room for them, and viola! The family is on their way to their destination.
What this does for the airline industry is bring in more cash, and it can reduce the amount of stress on the family.
Like I said, this is a completely random idea that I thought the airline industry might take advantage of. Of course, the airline can spin it however they want, but the end result is a win-win for both the airline and the family.
In my own humble opinion, this would help increase the appearance of being more friendly. Imagine bringing back the thought of flying the friendly skies again…

Mmm I don’t know if this is a good idea or not, but from your example above. Mostly people already know when the baby will come if family’s daughter is pregnant. I know this because my wife also pregnant. It could come earlier or later. But if it is not come premature, mostly 40 weeks.

Good idea, Wayne. I wish the airlines would do something like this, but (getting more jaded, the older I get), I can’t see them actually doing it. Friendly skies? Not any more.
What a great idea, some airlines do (or did) have a policy about family bereavement, which I have used myself. You still get stung, but not as bad.

Hey Wayne,
Great idea, only I doubt the airlines give a crap about the poor struggling family. The reason they want long lead time is two fold. The money of course, but they really need to optimize the quantity of iron that is in the air and they would not be able to save bucks if several pre-pays showed up on short notice.
Just my thoughts and I like your idea. Now sell it to the fly guys. \grin/
