Blogger.com Help - Lesson 14 - Email Settings

Blogger.com's email settings tab allows you, the blog owner, to do something really terrific.  With the settings found on this tab, you can post to your blog via email and also have your posts sent to a list of email addresses whenever a new post is posted.  This can be beneficial to Blogger.com users in many ways.

Use Your Email to Blog

I never really gave it much thought, but using your email client to blog can be, perhaps, a bit better than the interface provided by Blogger.  At a minimum, it would be a great way to capture ideas for posts as they happen in your head.

How many times have you had a great idea for a post and then just let it slide by, or forget to write it down?  I've done this many, many times.  Sometimes I'll write it down, other times I'll create a draft post and come back to it later.  Now that I've discovered this feature, I think I'll simply send an email to my blog and have Blogger put the post into draft mode.

Mail-to-Blogger Address

The Mail-to-Blogger Address is where you create the email address that you can send your emails to.  Simply enter something into the textbox provided and click save.  You can immediately start using this feature.

email to bloggerThere are also two options below the email field that specify if posts sent via email are published automatically or if they enter draft mode first.  If you specify 'Save emails as draft posts' then you have the perfect solution to help capture those ideas as they happen.  Of course, I'm assuming you have access to email throughout the day like I do.

I already sent one post through this mechanism and it seems to work beautifully.  One thing I might mention is to start out with tests.  I added a link into my email and the formatting was sparse.  What would happen if I tried to inject a video, or a picture into the email?  How would blogger handle that?

I would imagine that most email clients don't provide the ability to float objects to the left or right, causing your post to look less than desirable (If you are anal retentive like myself).  If you are only posting text and links, you are good to go, but any pictures, videos or other objects will probably need a little more love on the Blogger Edit Post side of life.

BlogSend Address

The BlogSend control allows you to have published posts sent to the email addresses that you enter into this control.  This does not include drafts, only published posts.

I will venture that the best use of this comes when you have multiple authors on a site.  One author posts, the others also get the post in email.  It's more immediate that an RSS feed, and more personal since it goes directly to the emails you specify here.

That's It!

There isn't much on this administration screen by way of controls, but these two items are quite powerful and provide you some really good tools to help you work your blog.

Do you send emails to your blog?  If so, how has it worked out for you?  Do you have a work-flow that you follow that includes emailing to your blog?

Is anyone going to start using this feature now that you know about it?  Let us know!

I've noticed the email posting feature but figured I would be unlikely to ever use it since many of my posts include photo's and it takes a bit of work to get them like I want them anyway. The idea about emailing 'draft' posts is good though. I might have to try that so I am set up for it in case the need arises.

I think you are right about the email function for announcing you have made a post. It is probably of limited value since most readers could subscribe if they are that interested in the blog. There may be situations, however, with multiple authors or with special friends and such where the individuals would like to receive emails so it would come in handy then. I probably would never use it unless the proposed recipient actually asked for an email update.

When I first looked at this particular admin page, I ignored it completely. Like we both said, the 'email draft' idea is probably the most utility one might expect from this page.

You probably already know what pictures you are working with when you draw up a post, and those can always be added into the post later on the Blogger edit post screen too.

My approach is always to know all that is available to me and create my own workflow and routines around that. I don't think this gets the attention is probably deserves.

Have you ever used a desk top publishing program instead of the blogger dashboard. I currently use Windows Live Writer, which is free.

I do have email on my phone yet so I will be coming back to this when I need to comment via email!

Hi Adam, yes, I use Live Writer everyday. It's much better than any of the interfaces on a web page. I plan on writing about it in the coming months.

there must be a gene deficiency here Wayne. I tried to follow your instructions but---confused? I went to my dashboard, clicked on settings, clicked on email and found the box you make reference to and the two options below it---you said type in something ---so I typed in ThreeScorePlusTen, clicked on Save. I assume the box with the text in front of it,plus the text I put in, plus the text afterit constitutes the address I would use to send emails. So I sent a test email to that address----I found it in my personal email account, not in my blogger.com ?? IN short I merely sent and email to myself. (----I might as well just left myself a sticky note pasted to my computer screen.)---- am I doing something wrong?

Gary, make sure you type the text that is in front of the value that you supply to the form, and what is after.

for example, you would send your email to:

    gary123.WhatIEntered@blogger.com

If you didn't see it in your drafts or on your blog, then ya, you sent it to the wrong address. Tell us what becomes of this when you try it.

Check it out mango: Any links must be entered as http://www.somewhere.com with nothing touching it. Anything else will be mangled. This is to help combat spam and to also ensure the masses know of this little tidbit before they click Save comment below. :) I have this down to remind me to do something with it, but I take things slow and easy on the old horse.

Keeps her regular don't ya know, and I wouldn't want to disturb that.
