A Fascination with Pink Floyd

I'd like to do something a little different and offer up a few videos that I really like and giving a little background why I chose them.  After doing the 9 Layers (yes, I've been sitting on this post that long...) thing, I thought some things could be expressed for me by others that I either admire, am entertained by or simply enjoy.  Hope you like them too!

Pink Floyd - Careful With that Axe Eugene

Pink Floyd is my all time number one band if there ever is one.  I collect absolutely everything Pink Floyd and have every single thing you could ever own in terms of music.  Even have a few boots that I found around the Internet (I'm lying, I really don't...no really...I don't).

I ran into Pink Floyd sometime after The Wall was released and became enthralled by the depth of thought I found behind the wall.  Ever since that first listen, I've explored the depths of their entire catalog and found that I love everything, EVERYTHING about this band.  Roger Waters is so willing to put his heart and soul into his singing and music, David Gilmour's crying guitar, Nick Masons rhythmic drumming and Richard Wrights haunting keyboards, it all sounds so great together.

I chose Careful with that Axe Eugene as one of my favorites simply because I really like what Waters can do with a simple scream, and it's a very haunting piece of music.

At the early stages of WayneJohn.com, I made a radio station of the site and streamed the entire Pink Floyd catalog through ShoutCast.  I could host 7 listeners with loss-less audio through my little DSL line.  Any more and the music became choppy.  Fun times!  This is way before the RIAA stepped in and made their presence known.  Ultimately, I hope I brought the beauty that is Pink Floyd to some new people.  Hell, all I wanted to do was listen to Pink Floyd 24/7, and that's what it was...all Pink Floyd, all the time.  Good times.

I felt bad for doing it once I realized the impact to the artists themselves (sound familiar?).  I have also tried to make amends by contributing to some of the same charities that Roger Water's supported.  I don't think anyone can come after me at this point, and I really hope they don't, that would be a bummer.

Oh, and here is one of the most important Roger Waters songs I think there is.  This is a song I can believe in and agree with whole-heartedly.

The fact that we continue to live out our lives in the face of such disasters as global warming, species going extinct at ever faster rates, and we don't see the level of outrage or concern and take these matters personal scares me somewhat.  Now, you might say that you are trying and that you do this and that, well, that's excellent.  What I'm really talking about are things like the media continually sensationalizing the earth impending doom for the sake of their corporations wallets.  Amusing ourselves to death.  We all are all guilty of watching the news and not saying a lick about the quality of the show we are watching or show concern over the message.

A deadly virus is sweeping the country killing millions in their sleep, what you can do to save yourself.  Hear the story in the morning at 7 o'clock with Brad and Jen.

Hell, I could be dead by then!  If they really cared about you, and were not sensationalizing the message, don't you think they would just tell you, instead of creating that 'hook' and hoping you'd stay around to hear how you might save yourself?  At least, that's how I see it.

What are your thoughts?  Do you see television and radio the same way I see it, nothing but big fat corporations pushing their products down own throats with a constant barrage of commercials and mind-numbing ad spots?

Do you think that seeing these commercials over and over again takes a bit of effect on our minds and psyche?  I do, whole-heartedly, and I detest it.  Think of all those commercial jingles that get stuck in your head.  They get stuck because the marketing types know how our brains work, and it's done purposefully.

I don't think anyone should be able to remember a single commercial from the seventies, but I bet you could recall plenty of them if you tried.  Some may take a stretch to remember, but others may come like a snap.

Now, with all that said, won't you buy my product and amuse yourself?

I think the news is all bad with maybe, if you're lucky, a cute 10 second story at the end. It's bollocks I say.

Frequently, when I have the opportunity to watch the morning news over a cup of joe, I learn about stories that were on Digg or Stumbleupon days ago. It really is sad how we are manipulated by the media.
Oh I love Pink Floyd too...maybe not as much as you. My favs have to be Meddle and Dark Side.

The really important news gets about a 5 or 10 second blurb somewhere buried amongst the car ads and cereal commercials. For me tv news is just noise in the background. There are needs and wants and I guess as you get older collecting stuff just isn't that important. The days of Walter Cronkite and Edward R. Marrow are gone. If you don't know them they were considered the most objective news casters ever but then those were the times when the news was not trite or used for entertainment.
My favorite Pink Floyd - Dark Side

@Leslie - Bollocks the lot of it...

@Adam - Yeah, I've noticed that too after getting more involved with online media. The stories on the news are already old by the time they air. Meddle is a great album...fav song of there is San Tropez...groovy toe-tapper that one...

@Demeur - I remember them, but not in their day of course. Things seemed more respectable back then didn't they? I mean, I'm looking back to a time when I didn't exist and think that back then things were on the up and up. Now? I think things are filled with hidden agendas and I distrust everything coming out of deep pocket media giants.

I wish they'd get a clue and actually return some level of honor and dignity to it.

Wayne - If you're like me you get your news via the net which may be a good thing. It forces you to dig behind the 10 second sound bites and get the whole story something MSM won't do. With all the great news blogs out there it's not too hard.
On Pink Floyd - I only wish they would have done a video of their work when they were still together. I did get to see Starship when they were together almost as good as Floyd.

    Good morning wayne!!
Excellent post and about freaking time someone says something about it. I toss the idea about every now and again of raging against the machine in a blog post or two, but fall silent. "is there anybody out there"
For me its about being in control of what I see and hear. I don't watch alot of TV nor do I allow my kid to watch alot of it either. When I do watch the boob tube its the discovery channel or national geographic, though theyre becoming merchants of fear and chaos as well, with the shows about impending asteroid hits, and mass extinction stories.
OH no a big chunk of space rock is gonna blow up the planet.
Actually I did my part for peopes sanity not long ago. I had to take the bus to where my girlfriend works so I could grab the car, so along the walking route from the bustop I noticed this sign stapled to a teleophone poll. "ARE YOU STRESSED OUT" "ARE YOU SUFFERING FROM STRESS" in two bold head lines. next sound you heard was a riiiiiiiiip, off the poll it came, I crossed the street and kep walking , next poll at the very next set of lights same sign, riiiiip, I took down 4 of these negative messages. Imagine how many people are seeing that sh!t on their way to work first thing in the A.M. Screw that and screw you I dont want to be impacted by negative before 8 am in the morning, nor do any others.

Sorry all, been away for a bit. It was nice to get my nose out of the glowing box for a bit. Smile

@Demeur - The lack of video from Pink Floyd's early days is really disappointing to be sure. I've managed to find some really good stuff on YouTube, in fact, there is one video for Grantchester Meadows (off Ummagumma) where Roger and David duet the song. It's here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mV9AwB-DnoI Well worth the watch! It'll make you want to put flowers in your hair I suspect...

Joanne - 'Wish you were here' surrounds my license plate. Smile I didn't know if you were aware of the issue or not, so I felt it best to let you know. That's how I get wind of issues on the blog sometimes. I still have that post in queue! Smile

@Karen - I'm with ya, except maybe the kitchen gadgets. wink

@Shane - Don't get me wrong, I love, LOVE the asteroid shows and impending doom type programs. I find some odd satisfaction knowing that our time here is limited and that I should make each day worth having another day. Plus I'm interested in future events like that.

I get soooo damn tired of commercials that my skin has worn a bit thin for them. Posters included, thanks for taking them down! It's amazing what people will fall for sometimes. Not to say there isn't a need for things like that, because there is, but does it need to be in our face everyday?

Quite interesting that you did this posting at this particular time. Hearing of Richard Wrights passing made me very sad. I have been a Pink Floyd fan since my early teen years, circa early to mid 70's. I agree about this band being my all time number one favorite. From the early days of Atom Heart Mother to Pulse and the live version of Dark Side of the Moon.......it is all good. Hell my 74 year old mother is a Pink Floyd fan........talk about music spanning the ages.

Irony can really suck sometimes heh.

What I find the most interesting is the depth that you can swim within their music. I can hear the horn intro to Atom Heart Mother in my head right now in fact.

I can only speak to the concerts after Roger Waters and David Gilmour split, both Pink Floyd and solo tours, there was always this eclectic mix of people, all races and all ages. Very beautiful to be part of that.

Richard Wright is going to be sorely missed by all Pink Floyd fans around the globe. Although Roger and David get most of the attention, he was a vital part of Pink Floyd to be sure.

I bet your mother has some great stories about them and their shows if she caught any.

I couldnt believe my ears when I heard the news on our local radio station. How crappy is that. Well I guess we're all mortal huh. Good thing the music will last hopefully forever.
Like eric and wayne stated their music crosses and spans time.
