Improving the Speed of your Homepage

I recently installed the Technorati reaction count to WayneJohn.com and realize now that it simply slowed my homepage.

Readers current with my blog will remember a post I wrote last week about adding a Technorati link count widget to your blogger.com blog.  When I wrote that I also added the widget on here as well.  After I did so, I reloaded my homepage and it crawled during loading.  I thought this was a temporary thing with the new Technorati widget, but it hasn't gone away.  The page had continued to load slowly.

Why did it do this?  You'll notice that my homepage is a listing of the past 10 posts, and each one would have to reach out to Technorati to get each posts "reaction" count.  10 hits out to another server, one for each post displayed on my homepage.  I could better use the time to load something else than continually display 'no reactions'.  I haven't tapped Technorati that well yet, so I might as well save you the time when loading my homepage.

I decided to only show the Technorati reactions when viewing the post.  I felt that was good enough.

You might also notice that I'm changing some of the text found around the blog.  I'm trying to find that right message that I want to give first time visitors.

This is a simple example of how I might look at a site to make a small change and get some dramatic improvement.  The ultimate goal is to have it snap to in appearance, right?  I think these small changes will help towards that end.

How about your site?  Does it snap or creep open?  Have you taken a look at Technorati and done anything to your blog?

I find your page pops up fast enough here when I activate the link? You might want to consider a blogger lesson talking about how to post and use just an opening sentence withe the "---more" link to get the full post. Just a thought, I also am curious to know how some do the word line out trick?----and then how does one go about changing the color of ones text on headers and Labels??.

Your page always opens really quickly. I've never had a problem. Although, I am not loving technorati. It won't ping and they don't respond when you ask for help. I will probably be removing it.

I try to keep my site simple so it loads quickly. I don't like technoRATi or a lot of the other blog link things. Still trying to figure out how to put vids on the site. Just doesn't want to work right for some reason. All it does is come up as code.
Good suggestion Gary I've been wondering that myself. "More" after the fold as they say. Can you do that with blogger?

I don't use the widget, but when I was a regular user of Technorati, I do remember going onto the site and frequently having to wait for their site to download. I believe that Wordpress stopped using the Technorati blog reaction results in the dashboard because off inconsistent performance.

Well, it seems we are all in good company then. I noticed that I would be looking at my site, waiting for the technorati widget to load and thinking, 'this sucks'. The performance really isn't that great at times it seems.

Thanks all for chiming in on this. Seems I'm not alone. Smile

@Gary & @Demeur - Adding a "more" link is possible, but not without modifying your templates. Unfortunately, there isn't any easy way to do this, however, it is do-able. I think I may have a way to lessen the burden of dealing with the technical aspects of the templates for those that don't know HTML coding and bloggers own unique language. Stay tuned for more info on this...

I'm seriously wondering about Technorati services period. Is it worthwhile? I've never gotten much out of them other than occasional hint that someone was linking to my blog where I should perhaps reciprocate. (I'm referring to an ongoing link, not just being listed in the most recent comments on a blog which is something I basically instigate if their blog is set up in that way.)

And recently it seems that the service is seriously delinquent. It will not ping upon request or when it does it does not pick up new information. If it is not pinging upon request then I wonder how many it is checking anyway.

Any comments on their recent performance?

@Baker Watson - I've since given up on Technorati. I really don't find much use out of their service. To be fair though, I never really gave it that old college try either. Seems to me my time is spent in other areas before I spend the time with Technorati.

I too would love to hear what anyone else has to say about them.

Check it out mango: Any links must be entered as http://www.somewhere.com with nothing touching it. Anything else will be mangled. This is to help combat spam and to also ensure the masses know of this little tidbit before they click Save comment below. :) I have this down to remind me to do something with it, but I take things slow and easy on the old horse.

Keeps her regular don't ya know, and I wouldn't want to disturb that.
