Whatever Turns You On

Sometimes I'm fascinated by language and what people do with it.  There are always unique ways of saying something and we all know that from one area to another, people may say the same thing, but say it completely differently.

For instance, when I want to say 'do whatever you want', it can come out in a variety of ways. I thought I would write a post throughout my day that compiles a list of these.  I believe you might call these colloquialisms or idioms, but I'm not 100% sure about that.  I'm sure there are some English majors out there that will correct me.

Here are some that I came up with or have used/heard in the past.

Whatever...

  • Whatever turns your crank
  • Whatever blows your dress up
  • Whatever floats your boat
  • Whatever butters your biscuit
  • Whatever humps your camel
  • Whatever tickles your pickle
  • Whatever creams your Twinkie
  • Whatever flies your flag
  • Whatever lights your candle
  • Whatever makes you wet/hard
  • Whatever peels your banana
  • Whatever mows your lawn
  • Whatever paints your wagon
  • Whatever starts your motor

Have a favorite that's not on this list?  Share it with everyone by leaving a comment below!  Come on, it's fun!  Feel free to put anything that makes your tail wag.  :)  Or whatever makes you drool...or...ok, I'll stop now.

    You have the idea. Its not what you say, its how you say it. Proof, any love song. Its contents are older than music but have been rehashed and reworked from a different angle, and that is usually a big part of what makes it successful. Oh, and i'm no english majur but I believe your list could be categorized as both coloqualisms and idioms depending on the contexts'.

    well yeahh I got one that came to mind----its how a country boy might answer in a positive vein by saying, "Does A bear shit in the woods?" Perhaps a bit to colorful for some---but figure you can handle it okay----I hope.

    What ever gets you up in the morning. Typically used in a sarcastic manner to convey the fact that what ever it is you are thinking about doing I find it stupid. But hey whatever gets you up in the morning!

    Whatever lights your fire....similar to candle. I'm actually a big fan of one you already had..."floats your boat."

    @ryan - I need to remember that!

    @Gary - Never too colorful for me, and mild enough these days to be acceptable...all things considered right?

    @Karen - lol

    @Leslie - You reminded me of the Doors just then.

    I realized I never specified a favorite, but if I had to, I'd probably go with 'blows your dress up'. For me, it always calls to mind one of Marilyn Monroe's moments... Although, the Twinkie one is good too.

    I hijacked my dad's phrase: whatever whizzes your beanie! But there's a lot of people out there who just give me a blank stare, like they don't know what a beanie is or why it would whiz.

    Wayne Says:

    @alex - I have never heard that. I think you'd get an eyebrow raise as if to say 'huh?' from me. Not sure why it would whiz too. I guess that isn't so different from 'none of your beeswax'...never got that one either.
