Is this joke spreading hate?

I was recently sent an email message from someone on a social site I frequent.  It's one of those posts that are sent to you without any concern of whether you wanted it or not.  A 'here's a joke for you' message as it were, regardless of it you wanted it or not.  I found it hateful, what do you think?

Personally, I don't believe in spreading around jokes or chain emails.  If I need a joke, I'll find one.  Occasionally receiving one is ok, but if someone continually sends jokes, doesn't know me personally, and has never even attempted to make contact with me, what are they really doing?  Do they really have nothing better to do than to email people they don't even know?  They may think they are spreading sunshine and a laugh, but all they are really doing is flooding your inbox on the social site to the point that makes the messaging system useless because all you ever find there are emails of junk.  It doesn't make it any better when it contains a message of hate masked as a joke.

Sigh...I'm pretty pissy right now, and I know that it's translating into this post, but I need to get this off my chest.  I felt this joke was of bad taste, and should have not been forwarded by anyone.

Here is what I received:

MARK YOUR CALENDAR FOR NEXT SATURDAY!
As you may already know, it is a sin for a Muslim male to see any woman other than his wife naked. He must commit suicide if he does. So next Saturday at 4 PM Eastern Time, all American women are asked to walk out of their house completely naked to help weed out any neighborhood terrorists. Circling your block for one hour is recommended for this anti-terrorist effort.
All patriotic men are to position themselves in lawn chairs in front of their house to prove they are not Muslims, and to demonstrate they think its okay to see nude women other than their wife, and to show support for all American women. Since Islam also does not approve of alcohol, a cold 6-pack at your side is further proof of your anti-Muslim sentiment.
The American government appreciates your efforts to root out terrorists and applauds your participation in this anti-terrorist activity. God bless America !
It is your patriotic duty to pass this on.

When I gave her a response to this, it was rather harsh, and for that, I apologized.  This just really chapped my hide though, and I acted out of anger when I should have taken a step back and approached this differently.

Having gone through this has really pointed a few things out to me.  Some people don't bother to read what they are sending around.  If she had read this email, I think she would have found the following a bit against her religion perhaps, unless her religion promotes hate.  I always thought religion should promote peace, love and acceptance of differences, but that isn't always the case these days.

She went on to mention that pastors and reverends received this email and found nothing wrong, or at least have not responded negatively.  Apparently I was the only one that found it offensive, or the only person that actually read it.

With stuff like this, it's no wonder the worlds opinions of Americans has diminished.  Not all of us are that arrogant and into world domination, and I'm tired of being classified as such.

So, I leave this open for the people of the Internet to judge.  Was the joke funny?  Was it promoting hate?  Was it appropriate to be sent? Am I just being overly-sensitive, or is there a legitimate reason to be offended by this?

You know my opinion, share with the world what you think about this 'joke'.

This joke merely points out the unsophisticated nature of Islam. I am Catholic and I not only enjoy jokes about Catholicism, I welcome them. I believe that my religion is so sophisticated and elevated above some coarse humor that jokes simply do not matter. I worship Jesus Christ as God, Almighty. But it wouldn't bother me if someone drew cartoons of him. It doesn't even bother me if someone uses HIS NAME as a swear word. A mere word cannot affect God. It certainly doesn't affect me. Someone using Jesus' name as a swear word is simply an ignorant, unenlightened stupid person.

the most fascinatingly stupid thing i can find from this, is how they bounce between calling them 'terrorists' and then 'muslims'. that the author can think of the two groups in the same way makes me think of someone from the dark ages, most likely.

and, what about the innocent muslims, who, by this theory, would be forced to commit suicide as a result of this 'demonstration'? and what about children, whose innocence would be at risk due to the rampant nudity?

sigh...there are too many inane points in that email that i can't point them all out, but honestly i'm frightened with the lack of intelligence the author shows. the fact that the internet allows the author and like-minded people to group together and organize themselves terrifies me. it is said that the sum of united human intelligence is greater than that of its individual parts. the same, unfortunately, also applies to the LACK thereof.

and yes, saddest of all, is how the author uses america as his mascot for anti-muslim sentiment. even on the other side of the world, i know for certain that "the american government does NOT appreciate your efforts", neither does it "applaud your participation". yay america, boo idiot.

now that i think about it, is there some overtone of satire that you and i are missing? for no one else to get offended by this is something i find highly improbable...did she forget part of the email when she forwarded it? even then, to call this "bad taste" would be an understatement.

Thank you both for your opinions. It's helping me feel beter about the whole thing. I didn't sleep well last night as I laid awake wondering if I was making a big deal out of nothing. In the end, I felt I was right to bring this up as an issue. I can deal with being wrong better than I can taking no action against something I feel is morally hurtful to the human race altogether.

I think leaving religion out of a counter argument is more constructive. People tend to get pretty up in arms regardless of which Big-Guy-in-the-Sky version they subscribe to.

I personally find the joke to be crass and tasteless, but would hesitate giving it too much validation. This, to me, sounds like any other racist joke: told (or retold) for the single purpose of getting attention.

You're right, people rarely LISTEN to the garbage they perpetuate. This sounds trite, but strangely applies: I was a blonde in the 90's, at the height of blonde jokes. Some were honestly funny and some were just rehashed racist jokes. My defense was to learn them ALL. When someone's teasing got too rough, my habit was to fire back 10 blonde jokes to their one (in the same vein, clean or dirty). Told in such a way, they quickly stopped sounding funny.

Now, that solution wouldn't work here, but I think illustrates my point about people not listening. I think any discussion aimed at getting them to do so would have to be carefully started... it's easy to tune out someone's angry response and cover up with, "hey, it's just a joke". I'd like to hear a "counter joke" that we could all use to rebuff "humor" like this. Something that keeps the stinger in, but makes everybody laugh.

Of course, I WOULD think of something like this AFTER Carlin dies... *sigh*

I did not find it this the least bit funny. What we have here is ignorance. I can understand why you are offended. If I were on the receiving line of this I would be offended. I'm so tired of racist stereotypes.

Its definitely hate propaganda---and is offensive on many levels---it even offends me that you posted it to ask the question---for it exposes its hatefulness to yet another group of readers. I hope you told the person who sent it to ya not to bother continuing any friendship with you----I do my best to avoid such "trailer park thinking"

All very good and valid points in my opinion, and I feel much better about myself now. If I had only not been so obtuse. I believe the person that sent this to me to be a nice lady, however I could not let it go by without sending something back to her in anger. I need to work on that for myself.

@GaryJay - I totally respect your side, and I agree with you to some extent. But if there isn't any spot on the internet that exposes these things for what they are, then what's to stop them?

Personally, I'm tired of these things as I feel they just bring us lower and lower and provide no real help to humanity in general. My hope is that people will find this and understand something they have been ignorant of perhaps. If it is only one person that learns a lesson from this, then I think the world will be one person better.

Thank you all for your comments. I hope this post does some good in the world.

@Reganite - I think all people should enjoy freedom to practice the religion of their choice, regardless of how "unsophisticated" one may view it. One might consider christianity to be quite unsophisticated and antiquated.
Since the world does not have one single unified view on what this supreme being is, and also that there are such extreme differences between various forms of religion, I am of the opinion that if we cannot agree to disagree, then we should not even bring it up, period. "Keep it to yourself" seems the most viable option in an immature world. Seems the most appropriate method to achieving world peace to me.
Thank you for swinging by and I hope to see more of you here.

So I'm late to the party, but here is my take.

It could be funny. If say your were possibly inbred creatin with no tolerence for difference. I think we all get sucked itno making fun at others expense. I'm catholic too, but I don't mind a good catholic joke here and there.

My point is, this went a little far. Just my opinion.

Hello Wayne, Nice to meet you. I am ok with you. This is a bad joke. Our boxes are flooding with these kind of jokes and sometimes it's too much. As you said if we need a joke we can find it by ourselves. See you another time
