For today's post, I thought I would lighten things up a bit and provide some fun for everyone. Everyone should be familiar with the outrageously hip night-time TV show 'Who wants to be a millionaire?'. Did I just say outrageously hip? I don't ever want to sound like some TV personality, so just smack me if I ever do. That last one doesn't count....sorry.
Getting back to having some fun! When we watch these types of shows, I will sometimes start yelling at the TV because I know the answer. I'm not saying I know everything, but we have all looked that the contestant at one point or another and thought 'this guy's a moron!'. If you have never had that type of thought, my hat is off to you. You're a better person than I.
What makes us call people names like that? Obviously it isn't going to impact the subject of your derision, he's already done recording the show, and you can't talk to the TV people, no matter how hard you try. It just doesn't work. :) We gain some level of satisfaction from it, or we are simply calling attention to ourselves.
The anger and emotions (however light or heavy) that we create in ourselves while watching inconsequential TV shows like this one, we bring on ourselves. The shows producers and marketing executives WANT to engage you at that level. It's what brings you back to the show night after night. It's what starts the water-cooler talk the next day in the office. They know that, and they exploit it to the best of their abilities. It's the hook for you, the fish.
The point is there isn't any point
There isn't any real point to most television shows other than to promote products, ideas and opinions. Unless you're watching the news, the History Channel, or some other instructional or informational program, there isn't any point to television other than to sell products to consumers, push political agendas, and convert you to whatever side is being pushed.
Consider that as you enjoy your soap operas, or the latest Inside Edition. What are you really getting from this other than mild entertainment a thirst for light beer and cravings for McDonald's?
The real point
The real point of this post is to simply bring some attention to what I like to call 'The Dumbing-Down of America'. If you aren't thinking, you are are being programmed to think in a certain way. Perhaps it's subtle, but I firmly believe that it does program you to think certain ways over the course of time. Take your brains and thoughts back, turn off the TV for a night and enjoy some music, get out and do something in the yard, work on your web site a bit. But for Pete's sake, turn off that darn television and go have some fun!
Ok, Now Have Fun!
Have a shot at the game. Post your highest score and give some love to yourself. Life is about having some fun, so go ahead, you deserve it. I played it tonight and got up to 1000 before I got one of those that you think you know, but you really don't know. I took a chance and blew it. Sometimes that's just the way life goes.
Have a fun weekend too!
