Web Site Idea for Urban Explorers

For my first post in what I plan to make a weekly series I decided that I would write about an idea that has been in my back pocket for some time now.  There are no web sites for urban explorers, that I have found.  I suspect that if I do happen to find one, it would be a joke site perhaps.  Here's an idea that could be groomed into something fantastically helpful for the destitute among us.

What's an Urban Explorer?

Officially, it's a term to describe one that explores modern architecture and modern ruins.  It's also a euphemism for a homeless person or family, which is what we are talking about here.  I prefer the term urban explorer to describe a homeless person or family only due to the negative connotation the word bum or other terms imply and the sad feeling I get when I hear the word homeless.  It's a sad state to be in, however, some choose to make their way as an urban explorer.

Irregardless of how they came to become an Urban explorer, either through their own errors in life, or by circumstance beyond their control, they are lacking a voice on the Internet due to the lack of resources they have available to them.  This could change if there was a way to get them connected.

Raising Awareness

The biggest problem here is how would an urban explorer actually make use of the Internet?   They can visit Internet cafe's, but that costs money.  They could buy a laptop and find electricity somewhere I guess, but that really isn't a solution either...obviously.

By raising awareness to the plight of the urban explorer, perhaps we can collectively do what the government has failed to do these many years.  Help them out and get them back on their feet.  They are, after all, part of the same country just like you and me, and some could actually really use the help.  It is the most in need that should be focused on first.

Qualification

I want to qualify something before I go any further.  When I say help those in need, I also mean help those that actually want the help.  One becomes an urban explorer in one of two ways, either by choice, or by circumstance.  If you decided to consciously to become an urban explorer, then perhaps you should deal with your own decision.  The people and families that are urban explorers by circumstance is where I'm aiming.

A web site for Urban Explorers

My initial idea for doing something to help involved a web site where people would create an account, much like any other site where a profile could be created.  The people that sign up are either 'helpers' or 'urban explorers'.

The 'helpers' are people that have the means to help.  Either by virtue of having a steady flow of cash through their bank accounts or by classic volunteerism.  These helpers would meet and interview urban explorers and get their story.  In turn, the story would be formalized, written up and posted for visitors of the site to read.  The writer would perhaps maintain some level of contact with the urban explorer in some fashion.  If they cannot, this will be harder to make work.

The profile of the urban explorer should provide ways to allow visitors to the web site to learn more about how the individual or family became an urban explorer, keep up with their progress of getting back on their feet and learn how they are doing it, make monetary contributions to the explorers to help out and provide feedback in the form of comments.

Comments and money collected are used to provide shelter and food to the family, or to help them out in certain circumstances.  Perhaps the community of helpers and visitors could determine exactly how each urban explorers funds could/should be used.  Ultimately though, I believe that the power of the collective will prevail to ensure that funds are used according to plan.

No Free Rides

I don't believe in free rides.  If there is anything I learned as a child, its that if I want something in life, I need to make it happen.  It starts with me, no one else.  So to help ensure that our urban explorer friends and families are not taking advantage of the system, much like many do that are on welfare, there should be some level of checks and balances put in place.  Perhaps the site provides updates to their progress.  Perhaps they are provided a way to update their progress themselves?  Either way, there should be checks put in place to ensure that we don't get weighted down by any freeloaders.

What else?

What else can be done?  The government doesn't seem to have any focus on helping these families in need.  What if the Internet community at large could help them though?  Much like the way the blogosphere has found a level of self-regulation (only the cream of the crop rise to the top by virtue of what everyone else thinks), couldn't the same concepts be applied here to help these people and families?

There actually may be government programs that could help.  In fact, the site could help match those in need with programs available for them.

In closing

Every time I try to make a left hand turn and there is someone standing on the island in the middle of the street, I ponder why this person is there, how did it happen, and then finally, if I give any money, will it be used properly?  Some look perfectly able to work, while others are obviously challenged.  How does one make that determination?  Perhaps this web site idea can help to clear the air and actually help those that need the help, without worrying if the money is used to help them, or help their habits.

I don't want any credit for this idea if it is indeed a new idea, in fact the idea was realized between myself and co-worker a few years back.  I only want to see that we are helping those in need rather than worrying about ourselves.  If you happen to take this idea and run with it, let me know and I will be more than happy to help out where I can.  There are plenty more people out there with more time than myself that could help make a difference.

We should all, if we are serious and want to help our fellow man/woman consider some ways to help out those in need, while filtering out those that will only take advantage.  We have the tools.  We have the man-power, why isn't it happening?

I picked up the domain HardLuckStory.com originally for this idea in case anyone wants to use it.

What would you do?

Have some ideas that would help this idea become realized someday?  See any flaws in what is presented?  Please take some time to provide any feedback you might have on this idea.  How amazing would it be to hear on the news that bloggers have collectively developed an idea that will aid and assist those urban explorers.  Fantastic!

I guess I walked myself about 360 degrees emotionally reading this post----and all I can say is--you sure got a weird sense of humor---gonna have to list you under "Social Mongers"---thats an ecletic group of people who are independent, sacralegious, agitators, who get bored easily so are constantly putting up social engineering suggestions to keep Society on they're toes. Its a good thing I realized quickly your post was made with tongue in cheek-----"Urban Explorers"---oooh thats a good one.

@Gary, I do apologize if I have offended, I am not about offending anyone, but I always seem to have that issue from time to time. Perhaps that was a bit rude, but I don't see it that way...why? I dunno...perhaps I'm a bit thick skinned when it comes to those things as most insults to me just roll off and I don't give them much attention.

I have another one for you though. You know those plastic bags that you get from the supermarket? Like the one in American Beauty, where it simply floats in the wind and the charater states that sometimes life is so beautiful...or something like that? Well, that bag....it's an Urban Jellyfish....

Old joke to some, new to others....

Getting back to the issue though, one thing I do need however is for people to tell me when I've crossed the line. Those lines are blurred for me I've come to realize and I have the tendancy to cross them when I haven't even known I've done it! People get upset with me, and I have no idea why sometimes.

The real bummer is when I don't know, and people don't think to tell me. I assume all is well and go about my day.

So, for the record, let me state here and now that this post is by no means a joke, and I wrote it in all seriousness to perhaps provide a means to aid those in the most serious of need. Good intentions, perhaps a bad delivery on my part.

I probably fit the social monger mold pretty well. And that's a post for another day. I should explore that a little.

I hope this hasn't tarnished our friendship. If you wouldn't mind elaborating on how this affected you, perhaps I can gain some wisdom from that so I don't inadvertantly do this again.

I can tell you from first hand experience that there is no easy solution to the problem. Some are homeless from job loss, divorce or illness. Some are mentally ill or drug or alcohol dependent. The lucky ones and those who have educations normally are able to get back on their feet in less than a year. The big problem here is that so much funding has been cut from the help programs that trying to hook them up with what's left of social agencies is almost a waste of time. Most people on the street already know where to go just by asking others in the same position. Food banks hand out a list of help agencies, but as I said before these agencies have had their funds cut and are experiencing problems from rising fuel costs. The real issue here is raising money for the agencies. There's the red cross which had to borrow money to help the flood victims in Iowa. The United Way,I haven't checked on them lately as to how they're doing and the Salvation Army who's donations were down a bit from years past.
So I think the real issue here is figuring out how to set up a type of business model to get the funds and support charities whether local or national. In a down economy that will be difficult.
    I applaud your effort though.

@Demeur - Thank you for your opinion on this. When I was growning up, I used to hang out in the park and speak with people that were homeless. I'd actually hang out with them and some became friends. If my mother ever found out back then, she would have had a conniption fit. But from that I realized then that they were no different than anyone else...some have just hit a rut in life and were struggling to get by and get back on the horse to ride again.

Well, with this idea now on the Internet for anybody to see, perhaps someone could bake this into a viable means to help out. That's all that was intended after all.

@Alex - Why thank you so much! That's very kind of you to say that.

I just had to laugh at the way you ended that conversation with those people pushing their religion. Classic, and I'll need to remember that for my own use someday. Smile

FUCK the lines! "lines" are created by people who refuse to see a viewpoint or listen to an opinion outside of their own. An opinion or viewpoint is just that. In today's society where everyone needs to be politically correct lest we somehow lessen a person's value by the words that come out of our mouth we have successfully turned ourselves into ultra sensitive excuse living babies.

e.g. My family is all overweight, so there's nothing I can do about it.
e.g. I grew up with alcoholics, I don't know any other way.
e.g. The trauma I've been through is too hard to recover from.
e.g. Times are tough, and I will always struggle.

And on and on and ON.

The bottom lines is, when someone TRULY WANTS to change, they do. Otherwise it's all just a waste of breath. In fact, I'm surprised more people's breath doesn't stink from the amount of shit that comes outa their mouth.

Humans have a great power about them, ALL humans. The problem is few actually choose to recognize and use it.

Call it wha you want, karma, reap what you sow, the law of attraction...they all boil to one, simple, fact: causality. Cause and affect. If one refuses to dig within themselves for the solution, which includes accepting help offered, than they will forever be entangled in their own negative web.

If I ever get too sensitive to have someone give me a perverbial slap upside the head, well then shame on me.

I personally think it's a great idea, and kudos for thinking of it. If there's anything I can do to help make it happen, you let me know.

feenx - I know some may see your comment as negative and harsh, but I just want to say that appreciate what you have said. I've been holding myself back from screaming at the top of my lungs all the things that I see wrong, and that people allow to continue day after day. I'm slowly learning to take a different approach and try to lead people to my way of thinking, allowing them to make that leap themselves. No one wants to be pushed in any direction, they need to make that happen themselves, for themselves.

"In fact, I'm surprised more people's breath doesn't stink from the amount of shit that comes outa their mouth" --Even when their breathe doesn't stink though, you can still tell if you look for the right clues. Smile Love it!

Thanks for swinging back by feenx, and if you ever start going off the deep end, I'll be there to smack you upside the head and help you to get your bearings again. Cheers my friend!
