What's a Blog?

I wanted to give out a sneak peak at something I've been working on.

It's a page describing what a blog is, and what blogging is all about.  The intended audience for the page are those that don't have the first clue about blogging or what it all means.  Of course I've been telling my friends and people I meet that I blog and have been doing so regularly for the past few months now.  The standard response I get is, 'What is a blog?'.  (Mind you, I don't go blogging about me blogging, that would just be silly wouldn't it)

Sigh...I feel like the lonely blogger sometimes when blogging comes up in everyday conversation with friends and family.  They all look to me for answers with computers and the Internet, so I thought the best way was to write it myself and then I can simply refer them to my page for more info on blogging.

I've also been extremely over-critical on myself over this page, so thought I would toss it out there for some feedback and initial reaction to gauge if I need to do more or less of any one concept or thought.

Check out: What is a Blog?

Thanks in advance to all who take time out to read this and supply some feedback.  It's much appreciated!

Well in that I am probabely as close to your audience as one can get, being a newbie to the sport of blogging (I consider it a sport). I would say sounds like a great project and you have the ability to explain things simple enough for those of us that have finally learned how to get our vcrs to stop blinking 12:00 and are ready to take on new stuff. One word of caution for ya to keep in mind. Keep the first few chapters really simple---give the rats some cheese, you can get more complexity once ya got em eating out of your hand. First sell them on its a great way of communication with family and friends--better than email. Do not razzle-dazzle em with a whole bunch of terms like blog, blogging, labels, tags, headers, side-bars, widgets, html codings etc, etc, etc. Picture your audience as being a old dude, eager to learn but sooooooo ignorant of computers and technical geek stuff

You have some excellent ideas there. I think you are spot on with that one. I was thinking that I may have gone a bit too into the 'why'. Perhaps I might break that into two different sections. Perhaps lighten it up a bit too.

My plan is for that to be the general overview that I could refer to now and then as I write more detailed, smaller chunks as well. Perhaps the comments I get and the posts I end up writing around these pages will cause some updates and modifications to the content itself and the way it's presented. In the end, easy to digest and comprehend is the goal.

    Great ideas Gary! Thanks!

Hey, I know about that family reaction thing. When my kids (grown by the way) found out I had a blog they first laughed a bit thinking I was on MySpace or the like trying to reconnect with old friends or showing pictures of my funny Halloween costume or a clip of the dog singing along with CCR. (BTW, mine is not a 'personal' blog. It's sticks pretty much to one subject and was meant more as a chronicle of sorts about observations around a small pond. Never will be a big blog but that is ok. Wasn't meant to be.) I'm not sure the kids understand the whole idea of a blog but at least they visit it periodically, lol.

Gary is right about keeping it simple initially. I find many of the friends who visit my blog are definitely not computer types and not familiar with blogs at all.

    BTW, subscribed to your feed.

Baker - Thank you for visiting and taking the time to comment on this. About non-computer types, they (and others of course) are who I hope will find my blog and perhaps gain some insight from simple, straight-talk about technology, blogging, web sites etc. Trying to close a part of that digital divide I guess.

I find that my peers always seem to write for each other. Providing code samples, tricks and techniques that are way beyond any utility for the average Joe and Jane. I get bored to tears with that, as I have yet to post anything geared towards them since my very first posts.

Thank you for subscribing also, I hope you find my posts to be a source of good information, motivation and inspiration. Your feedback is always welcome and wanted! Thanks for being here!

Keeps her regular don't ya know, and I wouldn't want to disturb that.
