AP Goes After Bloggers For Posting Article Headlines And Snippets

Just like this one.... :)

Last fall, the Associated Press claimed that it was ready to change to face the new internet world -- and that meant not just being a gatekeeper, but joining in the conversation. As we noted at the time, though, AP execs said all that, only to immediately follow that up with plans that looked like it was trying to become a new type of gatekeeper. It didn't help that the company had also just sued VeriSign's Moreover division for linking to AP stories along with a title and a tiny excerpt. That sort of thing is clearly fair use -- but the AP doesn't seem to think so.

Read the whole thing here: AP Goes After Bloggers For Posting Article Headlines And Snippets

You've seen my posts, I have no fear of anything here, but I think the AP has lost it's mind a bit.  From the comments I read on this story over on TechDirt, a former employee was stating that they just don't get it.  After several layers of firing above and below, they just don't know what to do about this whole blogging 'thing'.

This also smacks of my issue over republishing RSS feeds on another site.  The most interesting thing is they are trying to eliminate something that could actually drive more traffic (revenue) to their side.

I just don't get big corporations anymore...  Perhaps this is a simple case of people fighting to keep things status quo and not losing out to new, young buck types that comprehend these things better than the older, cigar smoking, snifter drinking crowd does?

How can they do this when it clearly falls under fair use?

being retired now (from a MAJOR aerospace firm as they say on WheelOfFortune). I have to say I see the evolution of the major corporation changing to reflect the world wide web. There is no employee loyalty, there is no central headquarters, or fixed plants where one has to commute and mingle with other workers, its all ambigous---at the moment, old mangagement is in conflict with the newer younger mgrs, and as a result you are seeing one major corp after another hitting the wall, becoming confused, major corps are all dinosaurs and slowly dieing off.

@Rose - That's what all beef is about. If it's clear that it does in fact fall under fair use, it would make sense that bloggers are crying foul.

I, for one, would love to be part of that fight somehow. One of my own 'itches that I need to scratch' (thanks Gary for the term) from time to time is a display of friendly rebellion against the corporations that think they own the world. They don't, the people do. we just let them exist.

@Gary - It all kinda makes perfect sense doens't it. I've always pictured the Internet like the waves in a rough sea (quite unlike those 'tubes'). Over time, those waves will calm and things will slowly start to become predictable. We are simply heading into the storm at this point and I see no calming of those waves for some time.

Perhaps I should blog my thoughts on that to help that analogy make more sense.

As a blogger - I'm crying foul. I think they are overstepping of their bounds here.

I think we may see an increase in bloggers looking at AP for articles to post. A title and snippet is about all it takes apparently.

If every single blogger did one post like that, every day for a month, I wonder how AP would react then?

Check it out mango: Any links must be entered as http://www.somewhere.com with nothing touching it. Anything else will be mangled. This is to help combat spam and to also ensure the masses know of this little tidbit before they click Save comment below. :) I have this down to remind me to do something with it, but I take things slow and easy on the old horse.

Keeps her regular don't ya know, and I wouldn't want to disturb that.
