I decided to switch themes. I've had some time to explore BlogEngine a bit and was using the Cogitation theme and found it too techie for my tastes (which can switch at the drop of a dime sometimes).
This theme is called Leaves. I thought it was a better place to start, being so wide open and airy. In the coming months I'll be updating the theme to include some additional elements as well as messing with the color and general structure. I'll post updates to changes and perhaps the occasional tid-bit of something I learned along the way, to pass it on. Cheers!
