As a follow-up to my post on what I've been up to lately, I thought it would be nice to continue the chronicles of my hosting consolidation efforts.
I recently completed the transition to my new server and have canceled my DiscountASP.net hosting account. I had to take a few steps to get to this point, so here is what I did.
- With the web site already transitioned, I still needed to migrate my email. The first thing I did was create an email account on my destination host's server that would replace my WayneJohn.com email on DiscountASP.
- I modified my DNS to point to the new mail server.
- I waited about 30 minutes for the DNS changes to propagate.
- When my test emails finally made it through successfully, the transfer was complete.
- Canceled all accounts on DiscountASP.
End result of this is that I will now save about $300 a year on hosting, email and Sql Server databases that I had at DiscountASP. Not only that, but I'm much closer now to having all my domains and hosting accounts transferred to my new servers.
My next step will be to transfer the domain name from Register.com to my own servers. I may do this over the weekend. When I do, I'll detail that as well.
