Pink Floyd did the soundtrack for the movie La Vallée, released 1972 by Imperia Films. The French film name translates to The Valley and was written and directed by Barbet Schroeder. The second film Pink Floyd has done with Barbet. The first being the movie More. The soundtrack was released as Obscured by Clouds.
I have yet to see this film, so here is the synopsis from Wikipedia (link):
Viviane (Ogier), the wife of the French consul in Melbourne, joins a group of explorers in search of a mysterious hidden valley in the bush of New Guinea, where she hopes to find the feathers of an extremely rare exotic bird. Along the way through the dense jungles of Papua New Guniea and on the peak of Mount Gilowe, she and the small group of explorers make contact with the Mapuga tribe, one of the most isolated groups of human beings on earth, who inspire them to explore their own humanity, unfettered by their own subjective ideas of “civilization.”
Obscured by Clouds is one of my favorite Pink Floyd albums (in fact I was just blaring the song Childhood’s End and Free Four right now), and is completely different from the work they had done prior. In fact, Pink Floyd were working on Dark Side of the Moon when they were interrupted to create the score for this movie. What resulted is absolute beauty.
David Gilmour’s guitar work is impeccable, and the songs range from deep and thoughtful to fun and lighthearted. Childhood’s End is said to be inspired by Sir Arthur C. Clarke’s novel of the same name. Free Four gained radio airplay and is also noted as the first instance of Roger Waters’ dealing with the death of his father, Eric Fletcher Waters.
