I’ve been making some changes around here on WayneJohn.com. Popped a logo on top, themed out my install of Thesis a bit and just recently upgraded my comment form a bit. It’s taken me quite a bit of time to get it all done, but I’m really happy with the results so far. There is still plenty to do, but I wanted to just put out a little update on where I am with things and explain a few decisions I made. Perhaps you’ll find some ideas or inspiration from my own perspiration.
First off, the logo. It was designed by CPRWraps.com a while back for my business cards and letterhead. Actually, it started off as John Enterprises and I was going to have a different domain name for my business side, but over time it became apparent that opening a second site just for the professional side of my life just doesn’t make any sense. Why create a second site when I have this one right here? John Enterprises is Wayne John…why confuse it more than it needs to be. My name is already a bit confusing to some people, so why make it worse?
The colors in the logo helped direct the colors used in the theme. I wanted something a little more off-beat, different. I also wanted something that was more in my personal tastes rather than just good looking and unrelated. My blog is a reflection of who I am in many respects now. My love for the early days of green screens and amber monitors, fused with the Tron-like glow around a dull, motherboard-color green, with everything sitting atop a nice cooling system vent…ah, speaks right to my love for technology and programming.
Yes, that’s actually a cooling vent allowing fresh oxygen to fill the room. Ah, refreshing isn’t it? The fresh air is proudly provided by Twitter.
You’ll notice the floating bar on the left there. I’ve always liked how the social icons remain in view of the reader. I feel it’s unobtrusive enough there on the side, and hell, it would be nice to get more action on the social networks too, right? If you provide the opportunity to share, it might be shared. While I enjoy the simplicity of the social sharing icons at the end of each post, as a passive promoter of my site, it makes sense to keep these icons in view of the reader if you want to better your opportunity to create more buzz.
If you’re reading this on an older version of IE, like 6 or 7, please, for the love of all that is holy, migrate to a different browser! That said, if you’re using a more modern browser other than Microsoft’s IE, you should be getting the full effects I’ve added to the site. Rounded corners and shadows can be seen in a few different areas. Thankfully everything degrades nicely in older browsers…from what I’ve been able to tell. According to my results at BrowserShots.org, everything seems to be degrading fine.
I’ve also taken time to pick out fonts, choose matching colors using the color scheme designer. Hopefully the color blend is easy on your eyes, yet still easy enough to read and understand what’s being said. I mean really, if I need an eye test, I need to know these things. ![]()
The one thing I like the most so far
The comments form. For the longest time I’ve always looked at the comments form as a pretty stale part of WordPress. Not a lot of people really take a look at their comment form and critique it, and maybe spruce it up a bit. It’s always an eyesore to me to see a bunch of plugins that were added with their front-end interfaces just mish-mashed together on the comment form with no real thought placed behind them as to how they look. Are you doing this?
And speaking of those plugins, you know the ones: CommentLuv, KeywordLuv, TwitterLink, GASP and Subscribe to comments. Ok, well maybe you don’t know all those, but there are the links to them if you want to dig into them a bit more. I use all of them, and only a few really look good on the screen right out of the box. I’ve had to do a little CSS, a Thesis hook or two to get the controls where I really want them. They’re in an order that I feel they make the most sense to be in now. You can see that below.
There’s one more annoyance about all these controls though, they aren’t necessarily intuitive for new commentators to know or learn how to use without a little guidance. This led me to create what you see there now. Each time you put the focus on a control in the comment form, the side changes to share a few thoughts about that particular control. It’s pretty raw right now with only the immediate brain-dumping of text and ideas within it. I’m going to refine it a bit as time permits.
I thought about the possibility of making this a control with specific content that can be placed into it, not necessarily based on the control that has focus, but maybe in a different manner altogether. Don’t know. If you have some thoughts, please share.
For now though, I’m quite happy providing a few tips to maybe help those that aren’t aware of all the features I’m trying to pack into the comment form.
Forward to the future
While the future will always be the future, it isn’t until you take steps towards a goal that it might one day become realized in some today of the future. This post pretty much sums up about 2 months of “as I can” effort with two weekend marathons thrown in there. I’m a long way from done, and you’ll continue to see little tweaks here and there as time passes. The next major implementation I’m going to work toward is the homepage. There’s a complete overhaul coming, and a surprise site that I’ve been slowly building on the side. A little bit each day is all you need to build a site, and lose weight. That’s all I’m saying about that for now. Maybe a few of you more curious types can find it before I take it live? (Yeah, that’s a challenge right there in case you’re sailing on the good ship oblivious)
Oh, are you wondering about the title of this post? WTH is with the title? I don’t know. Maybe it’s an indication of something you’re about to encounter, and you don’t even know it yet.
To be honest, I wanted to make a more generic title rather than try to dress it up for a more “professional” post. This is easy going stuff here…not something I’m going to get all SEO on, know what I mean.
Be careful of big eyed tigers. This is your last warning.

Hi Wayne! (By the way, that is your first name, right? The ‘two first names’ thing confused me a bit, too
) I love the changes you’ve made. The first thing I noticed when I came to this page was the change you made to the location of the sharing buttons. Really a great idea – if I was technically-inclined enough to do something like that, I would. I hate having to search for the buttons when I want to share it. We should all want to make it as easy as possible for people to share our articles. Unfortunately, it’s not always that easy. The color scheme is also nice and definitely easy on the eyes, so I wouldn’t be concerned about that
Looking forward to seeing more changes in the future!

Hahaha, yes, Wayne is my first name and John is my last. I actually have three first names as my middle is Edward.
Glad to hear the colors are working out well for you. They do for me, but as you can imagine that doesn’t mean they do for everyone else. I think I mentioned somewhere that I’m the guy that will wear a tie-dye shirt with cross-hatch shorts. I’m not to be trusted to blend colors and designs at home. haha
Twitter: codedigitalcom
Hehe, I think spending another 30% of your development time to make things work under IE doesn’t make sense, I must agree here. As for the rest, I like the sharing icons on the left side too, I think it gives better changes that your content will be shared. It can be valuable if you could track it and share. I think there will be significant improvement.
Twitter: codedigitalcom
by the way, I have checked your website on the iphone, the icons on the left don’t show

And because you don’t have mobile version of your website (neither do I !!) I think your logo should be clickable, it’s easier to go to the homepage again
Twitter: waynejohn
Ah yeah, you’re getting ahead of me now. hahaha That’s in the works, but I need to get the homepage done before I do that. There are elements of the homepage that will need to be on the mobile theme, so I’m hedging on that one a bit.
You really do want to see that logo have a link don’t you!
That will come, you are very right with that idea, Lukas. Cheers!

I can’t for the life of me figure out why Microsoft allowed IE to become such a bastard child of browsers. It’s good to know when and where IE will have problems though. I have one client whose traffic is nearly 90% IE users….I have to test extensively for them. Sometimes you just can’t get around it.
Just curious, what is your review on BrowserShots? I’m looking for a cross browser testing site, and need fast screenshots on a variety of browsers
Twitter: waynejohn
It’s a good service…but going off memory here, one issue I had was having to wait for a full day to run another test. It’s not a place to test and retest (unless you’re a member I think). The end result of the BrowserShots process will yield you a bunch of images from all the browsers you have configured the service to test against. It does pretty well for what I use it for. Quick and dirty “does it pass” type of testing.

Thanks for the mention and the link. Love your “If you’re human and you know it, check the box” reference
I hope you don’t mind that I added you to my @CommentLuv and @KeywordLuv lists on Twitter and to my list of Dofollow CommentLuv KeywordLuv enabled blogs in my KeywordLuv post.
If you use BizSugar tweet me your profile link and I’ll add you to my list of collaborators who offer Small Business Advice and services too.
Twitter: waynejohn
I’m glad someone caught that and mentioned it. When I thought of writing that, I smiled and thought, someone is going to get it.
I’m honored that you would add me into your lists, Gail. I created a profile over on BizSugar as well, and will tweet you the link in a few. Interesting site, looks like they really did something good there.
Great work, I especially love what you’ve done with the social media buttons and the comment box. I think by the time we get to the comments box styling and text, we’re beginning to lose interest! Good for you getting it spruced up.
Twitter: waynejohn
Thanks Art! The social button box styling is my favorite perhaps. Took me a bit of figuring to get the glow to wrap around it like that, but it was worth the time I think.

Hi Wayne
Site looks good and thanks for all the link love – appreciate that.
Tiger tiger burning bright… read the post a couple of times looking for tigers and bots and all sorts of things.
Still a good title.
Look forward to the relaunch – got us all guessing now.
Twitter: eloquentlunacy
I’m quite liking the neon glow around the edges – and I’m with everyone else on the IE debate; I used to spend hours trying to nudge stuff around in IE 6/7, so I’ve instituted a No IE policy now.

Hi,
Just want to ask if you are still using Akismet on this site even if you are already using GASP.
Twitter: waynejohn
Yes I am.

I also miss the days of green screens and amber monitors. I wonder where my dear Tandy is now? Either in my parents’ garage, or sitting in a dump somewhere
Nice design changes. I use browsershots on a daily basis, it’s great.

I dig/have dug your “Tron” effect. And I like green. Green makes me think of outside – which is where I’m going to be in a half hour.
Have a great weekend.

I love to try thesis theme but Developer license is really costly and not within my budget. Love your website structure and it looks great in Firefox. Thanks for listing Plugins that you are using and I wish you best for changes that are happening in your blog. BTW love title of your post.
Twitter: waynejohn
And here I was thinking it was a bit plain, hahaha. If not down-right geeky.
I took the dive and picked up the dev version. I’ve been fortunate enough to have made a little money online, so reinvesting in some purchases wasn’t too hard to do. I felt it was well worth the money.

One tiger to kill the bots, one ring to rule them all…it’s all the same; sounds very poetic. =) Though I admit it was the title that made me curious. And yeah, the geek in me was hoping for a smattering of allusion to LOTR, if I was right about the inspiration for the title…
But that’s just me.

It’s like you know me.
I had finished watching all 3 movies when I wrote this one, lol. Did you like the tiger?
Twitter: tecbloggers
Wow, blown away by the amount of changes you have done here Wayne. Got to say I agree with you, the comment form is defiantly the best one of them all!
Tigers… yeah, not really getting you on that one
I am loving the way the sidebar box changes when you click onto a new box, what about the message box though? How about here is where the awesome content goes – refer to http://www.technologybloggers.org/blogging/the-importance-of-comments/
Twitter: waynejohn
Is this the first time you’re seeing these changes? The tiger appears during the comment. Check the GASP checkbox,
Also, do you not see the comment sidebar change when you place your focus in the comment textbox? I’ve seen that happen to me too, but thought it might be due to my being logged in. Every other time it seemed to work, so I thought it did. You should see a unique sidebar item for each element when it receives the focus. If you don’t, let me know! Perhaps it’s a matter of jquery specificity.
Twitter: dayafterstore
I don’t know if this will help you in your traffic analysis or not, but I found your site in a blog directory, with the tag “CommentLuv” (but for some reason your listing wasn’t tagged “KeywordLuv”). So it does pay for your blog to have these attributes and get listed in directories as having such…
Twitter: waynejohn
I hope someone updates that for me. I won’t worry about those things…I have too much to do already. Heck, I can’t even find time to work on a post these days! hahaha Since the eBay changes I posted about, I gained a LOT of new clients looking to have their sites converted. It’s keeping me busy and making a little bit of money, but the blog suffers as a result.
Can’t wait to be able to clone myself!
Hmm, I kinda liking this, I miss this stuff. Been busy for a while and I just remembered my “disregarded” site due to hectic schedules. I think it’s about time I make some renovations and stuff. Keep it updated and running again. Thanks for sharing.
I just started with WordPress and needless to say – I love it but still not sure how many plugins I should actually activate.
Reading information on the web it seems enabling some plugins can actually damage your blog? Not sure how much of it is true but one plugin in specific – keywordLuv…
Twitter: waynejohn
Is that a question, or are you just glad to be here? hahaha No seriously, you’re a bot, right?
You are so right about the comment area being a neglected part of the blog template. I’d hope that one day then comment forms will be fully integrated into peoples facebook and twitter profiles sot he whole conversation can happen seamlessly across the platforms. But then again – I doubt that level of cooperation will ever happen!
I really think that’s a nice idea with your social networking buttons to the side, reminds me of a tab on a folder. I can see where keeping the buttons in front of people that there’s a better chance that readers will actually use them.
Our business maybe a little behind because we aren’t utilizing social networking, so you have me thinking.
By the way, I like the green color!
Twitter: fazalmayar
good stuff wayne. i like the look of the theme even though i like thesis a lot.
Hi there, Wayne! Great changes you’ve made here in your site.
I love the floating social network icons here at the left, makes bookmarking this site easier.
The color theme looks excellent Wayne, nothing flashy I like this new look. This is what running a site is all about we need to keep updating and businessmen who run sites ought to learn from bloggers
who are often discussing and experimenting new plug ins. Thesis is awesome and your blog looks great!!
Hi Wayne, you blog looks great to my eyes
. I like that you are using a white background for posts. Because sometimes people use bright backgrounds and it’s impossible to read.
Hey, the logo looks really cool, the colors and the font are mind blowing. And I like the idea of buttons at left, its something which is really not common on the most the sites, but its really cool.
“Perhaps you’ll find some ideas or inspiration from my own perspiration.” haha, will have to use that line myself some time!
Hey Wayne,
I think you comment box looks great and you really have done a done job on your sight. I really like the green it is very pleasing to the eyes!!

Like the design, really diggin’ it!

Awesome Blog design
Wonderful artistic design.. This is Thesis theme I guess..
Twitter: sticky_business
I agree with Melanie – I am not a fan of a colored background for text but I do like dark designs. I had to read a few articles today with colored backgrounds and my eyes feel burnt out.
interesting way of writing the text, I liked your article, thanks
Hey Wayne, first time poster, been reading here for a few weeks.
Really like the new logo and the share icons on the side will definitely get you some extra traffic.
As for internet explorer, screw em. No one uses it nowadays
Take care, good luck with the awesome blog.

haha, I cannot agree nobody is using IE anymore, look at your website analytics account and you would be surprised. Think about poor people in some offices where they cannot install/uninstall anything. I am not saying I am a fan of IE, I hate it too and usually don’t even test my websites (lack of windows anywhere in the office and home), but if I had an option, I would definitely write few css fixes for the IE too.
Twitter: waynejohn
Exactly. If it’s out in the wild, you probably have users using it. Doesn’t matter what you think of the browser, you need to accommodate your readers first, browsers second.
I’ve been getting emails from google adsense. They said that there are a lot of spam on my blog. I am going to follow your tips because they have worked for you.
Thank you so much for sharing this.
Twitter: flowersbymail
Change is all we need, “President Obama”. Good luck with your tweaks
I like the logo thing! But I wonder why you prefer to display a flower as your logo and not anything else? I’m just curious as you’re a man and flowers symbolize femininity.
Twitter: waynejohn
You mean my flower favicon? It’s from a Halloween costume that I had made. See this: http://www.flickr.com/photos/28866851@N02/sets/72157622580089901/

I’m interested in seeing this favicon. Also I like what you’ve done with the comment section. It looks finished to me. What’s this spec on the right side?…..oh, my screen’s dirty =/

I really love this theme and like the way all the social networking tool appears on the left and stays there. Although it has green in the background, the middle section with while makes it so much easier to read.
Twitter: waynejohn
That’s exactly how I was feeling too. I know that darker sites are sometimes hard for some to read, myself included. I have a few more ideas that I’m going to implement soon. Just need to get a graphic artist on board for a little help.
Hi john, everything seems to be very organized here. Very easy for your readers to see what they’re looking for. Love the green here !
Twitter: waynejohn
Awesome to hear, thanks for sharing!
I really like what you ahve done with those social bookmarks. Those Social bookmarks block the articles on some site giving reader a hard time in reading their articles. And because the site is really streamline everything is perfectly place. I
