Make Money Online Status Report for June 2009

I’m enjoying wrapping up each month with a summary of how my efforts are going in terms of making some money online. I think the transparency is also nice and it shows that it really is possible to make a little extra cash for yourself when you put things together just right. I did a report for May in this post.

You might recall that at the start of June 2009 I was running this site on BlogEngine and then transitioned over to WordPress. The transition was a success, however I’m still dealing with several issues as a result of the transition. Namely:

  1. I’m still unable to create a hyperlink using the standard TinyMCE interface in the edit post screen
  2. An influx of spam. Seems that BlogEngine does a great job of eliminating spam whereas after the transition I’ve been bombed with spam on WordPress. I think this really has to do with the popularity of the two engines being so diverse. BlogEngine tends to be more for developers where WordPress is more for everyone, and also has a much larger user base.I’ve also noted that most of the spam is automated, and not provided by people fat-fingering the text.
  3. Becoming familiar with all the plugins and analyzing what they do. There are a bunch of plugins that are good, and plenty that aren’t worth the time to consider. Choosing between what’s needed and what is trash has been a bit time consuming.
  4. Deciding a new direction for my blog. I’ve taken some time to reflect on my own goals and how this blog plays into them. I’ve decided that I need to ignore the call to be so involved with everyone else, commenting just for the sake of showing that I’m there and participating. I’m opting to be more in the background of life again. The spotlight is not where I’m most comfortable.

With all that said, making the transition to WordPress has been a great experience for me. It’s also proved to me that WordPress is the best blogging platform out there, for many reasons in fact. I’ll elaborate on those points in another post. For now, let’s get to the good stuff and talk money.

Make Money Online Report

Last month wasn’t as good as I had hoped. I’m seeing a slight downturn in the growth that I had hoped would continue on eBay, but all-in-all, it was still a good month considering what I’m doing. Here’s how things turned out for me.

  • Google AdSense – $52.46
  • eBay – $69.90
  • DiggityHost – $9.40
  • Client projects – $200.00
  • LinkListings – $20

That comes to a total of $351.75, which I am calling really good increase overall. The client projects revenue was actually generated months ago but only recently came through to actual realization. I work with my clients sometimes. If they can’t afford to pay, I’m more than willing to work with them a little and allow the time to pay to stretch a little.

As you can imagine, I’ll be stepping up my game on client projects. I’ll be more profitable there now that I’ve worked out some kinks that have since made that pipeline not so attractive to me.

July is shaping up to be a good month as well, and a very busy one. After the 4th of July passed, I’m now looking at 2 weddings to attend and a big birthday bash to create and host. I’m going to be one busy pooper, but I’ll manage. Until next time ya’all!

Cheers!

Wayne

I’m really not interested in commenting somewhere to get comments on my blog. People comment here if they have something to add or say, not out of any obligation.

I’m also not interested anymore in the number of subscribers I have. Fact is, if you feel there is value here, you’ll subscribe. But having 10,000 subscribers doesn’t do a thing for me personally. (Well, ok, if I had that many, perhaps I could sell something, but then as soon as I try, I’d lose 50% of those subscribers). So I just ignore it and focus on writing to the best of my ability and generating a little income through projects and my own collection of sites.

As much as I believe you’re comment is spamful, I’ve approved it for the simple fact that you made that comment about “comment on mine and I’ll comment on yours”. I think it’s silly…

Welcome back Zaf! It sure is a slow process, at least, that’s what I’m finding.

I’m glad to have been a positive influence like that! Anytime!

  3. Zaf says:

Hmmm, wonder who that client project was!

Getting passive income is a slow process, but you’re on the right track by having incomes from more than one source. Anything is better than nothing. Having an extra couple hundred bucks at the end of the month does no harm.

Wayne, there’s so many interesting things to learn and not enough time in the day. You’ve really opened my eyes to facets of web development that would have taken ages for me to find by myself- even then, I wouldn’t have been looking anyway!

Hi- A couple people want to put links on my page for a fee, which confounds me, but whatever. How does one price that sort of thing?

I’ve seen this too, but have yet to take advantage of it. The first thing I would do is check out the site that they want to link to. Putting a link on your site is basically a vote for the other site. If you would not want to send people there, I wouldn’t put a link on the site. But, if you don’t mind doing so, charge as much as you feel is fair and what would be acceptable to them.

If they accept $100 per month, take it! If they believe $1 is fair, take it if you want.

There isn’t any way to gauge a value per se, it comes down to what both parties find acceptable.

If you work out a deal, put them in the blogroll or some other spot (blogroll is probably easiest since you already several varieties).

  5. Well I am always happy to see another person using wordpress as its the best. The income is pretty good. I think you can easily clear $1,000 a month doing work for clients.

@Demeur, You can’t be serious. Who in their right mind would go to blogspot after using wordpress?

I could probably if I focused on that, and perhaps I should resume that a little. I’ve been avoiding the commitments of client work a little to give myself time to focus on things that will continue to bring in cash without my involvement.

Heh, client work is where I’ve come from, and also what has stunted my growth with online social activity. I HAD to drop that to be able to focus on the social stuff and get that under my belt. Funny how that works…

      Thanks for commenting Deneil!

Those numbers look pretty good. Have you tracked your expenses involving your projects and the amount of hours you “work”? Just wondering; it would be nice to see what your bottom line was.

Well I’ve seen several other bloggers switch back to blogspot because they had so much trouble with wordpress.
I don’t see any comments here as of late. How’s the site traffic? And more important where’s the ads? How do you expect to make any money with out ads. I still like my idea of a virtual university but without the programing experience I don’t think that will happen.

@Demeur – I’m going to make a post, just for you Demeur. Everything is going wonderfully aside from the link problem, but even that has a work-around that isn’t too bad.

I haven’t forgotten the virtual university idea either. I remember discussing that with you a while back.

@DeadRooster – Good to see you too!

@Carolyn – I do have the expense information, and might be able to whip up labor expense as well. I should write about how I set up my financial part of this. Both you and Demeur have similar questions about it.

      @Karen – Thanks!

@Tattoo (Eddie) – Thanks, and if you keep plugging away you’ll eventually do as well if not better. It took me a while to get to here, and figure out a decent approach for increasing my chances for improving each month.
