What in the world is Cayra? It’s a free mind-mapping tool that I just learned about from Joe Stagner’s blog. In case you don’t know what mind mapping software can do for you, here are some examples and also what I plan to use it for.
- Flushing out ideas for posts – All too often I try to write a blog post that is all encompassing and covers everything I need to say about a topic. I personally want to change that around and break my posts into smaller, more consumable chunks and perhaps garner more readership by not blowing my entire load all at once.
- Describing the structure of a web site – Just like the visual site maps that display how pages are linked together, you can take that a step further and describe the concepts and perhaps gain some insight into the conceptual structure of a web site that would otherwise be hidden without some deep thought or a few more beers.
- Make a family tree – I’ve done the genealogy on my family back to the early 1800′s, and I’ve always wanted to display the people in a tree on the web. Update 12/11/2008: Unfortunately when I wrote this, and I’m sorry to interrupt the post, but originally I slapped two sentences together here in this spot that probably shouldn’t be together. So instead, I’m adding a few lines to separate them in an effort to make them sound a little better than before. Hope you don’t mind.
Here’s a snap of the default map and what the export looks like: Update 12/11/2008: See, that would have been such a horrible paragraph that I myself can bear read it like that anymore. Anyway, on with the pic…
Overall, the application looks great and after a little bit of loading up front, it reacts quickly. The screen scrolls and move around as you select various elements with smooth, fluid motion.
Follow the link below to visit their web site. The software uses .net 3.0.
Update 12/11/2008: Added a bit of gibberish above to ease my own mind, but also needed to change the link due to the original link taking you to some Russian site…I don’t know, but I updated the link to where I found the download. Just found it like that…sitting there. All wrong and stuff. Anyway, enjoy the software…I’ve been using it here and there to collect thoughts on certain topics. Nice place to brain-dump…but I digress.
