January is National Volunteer Blood Donor Month

GiveBloodGiveLifeI’m a big fan of giving blood, but since I’ve been getting tattooed quite regularly, the American Red Cross doesn’t want my blood anymore, and I completely understand. Giving blood has been my favorite charity to give to. It doesn’t cost any money, and it can save a life. Please take some time to read this post and learn a little more about how giving blood can benefit you and someone else who needs your blood, and perhaps save a life.

Giving blood is easy to do, and there are many locations where you can visit to donate a pint.

All you need to do is find that location to give a little blood. If you are in the United States like I am, simply enter your zip code into the GiveLife.org Find a Blood Drive search form. You can find a location, make an appointment and save a life. Incredible! If you live outside the United States, you can find your country here and link off to find where you can go to donate some blood.

If they won’t accept my blood, then there are other things I can do to help, like this post right here. Help me spread this message. Take a few minutes to let people know that this month is the National Volunteer Blood Donor Month. Send a tweet, update your Facebook status, write a post, link to this post, just help get the word out and encourage others to give blood. Someday you yourself may need a pint, it would sure be nice to have a world of people giving blood.

  1. Donating blood is a great way to donate to charities. I prefer to donate to the small blood banks. I recently found out that the red cross charges the hospitals the most for the blood donated so I try and help as many as the small guys as possible.

Thought he might have sent you a message – he’s good at following up like that!

I’ve finally decided on my very first tat – I’m so excited! Hope I can hack the pain ;)

  3. Wayne says:

Hey there Manz, he had shot me an email after I asked in the comment. Cool sites, I always thought tee shirt sites would do well, and there are a few I would buy if I wasn’t so damned poor. hahaha

And yeah, donate then get all the tats you can handle. After you’re tatted up, you can promote with a post here and there. :) I’m sure the red cross wouldn’t mind.

  4. Manz says:

So if I’m planning on getting inked, I should donate all the blood I can now!! Good to know.

We should all give whatever we can, whenever we can… giving blood is a fantastic, easy way to give back to others in need. Doesn’t cost you anything but a little part of your day – and then you’re rewarded for that with cookies…. yum.

  6. credit says:

Hmmm.. I do like to give away money, and my time to charities, however, blood is blood… I can say i’ve never donated blood before.
    Maybe I should.

  7. Wayne says:

Not at all, instead you should repost this on your blog!

    No remorse, no regrets!

  8. Heff says:

So if I get a bunch of tats, I should feel no remorse about not giving blood ?

  9. Wayne says:

I think straightalk’s avatar gave me my next tattoo idea…lol

I think it’s amazing that we are able to take blood from one person and use it in another person. The sophistication that has occurred in the last 100 years is nothing short of amazing. Yeah, I’d call giving a great honor.

  10. Adam says:

Great post Wayne. I believe giving blood is something we should all do if we have the ability. Last time I went to give blood, I was told because I had served in the Army in Europe and had more than likely eaten mad cow tainted beef that I could not donate.
A while ago, I had talked with a guy from Africa and he said where he is from it is a great honor to give blood…amazing difference in cultural norms.

  11. straightalk says:

I use to give blood but just as you with the tags all over my body I wasn’t even able to provide Blood for My young Boy last year.. SO please folks giving Blood is a really cool Free gift You can give any Human..

You guys are awesome, I think this is such a great thing to do too. Roger, 16 gallons!!! Wow!

The free cookies are the best, but I also like the apple juice too. Looks pretty small in my hand, but I’m man enough to sit there with my little square juice.

Not to turn this into a needle thing, but I think I enjoy that part. Ever since my first shot in the arm, and I remember it well. I was being distracted by my mom when out of nowhere I felt this ‘zing’ in my arm…it tickled. I looked over to see what I want to remember as being a hot nurse sticking my arm with a needle.

I don’t know if there’s a waiting period until, if ever, I can give blood again. The tattoos are just fun to get, and I know I’ll be doing more this year.

There’s nothing wrong with a good cookie either. :)

  13. Evyl says:

I give blood regularly. But only for the free cookies.

  14. Roger Green says:

Got my 16 gallon pin in November. Just sayin’.

  15. GaryJay says:

I stopped donating blood when I turned 60, I gave regularly when I was younger, even collected a 5 gallon pin—I also developed an unhealthy hunger for coookies in the process. so I stopped giving blood—but I still am into cookies (lol)

  16. Diesel says:

Good call Wayne, you’re absolutely right about it being free and making a world of difference.
I used to give blood regularly, but had to stop due to being on regular medication, and when that stopped I started getting tattoo’s myself.
However, this year I am clear to give again, so every six months I will be in line ready to have my armed tapped and fill that bag!

Anyone who is reading this, and never given blood before, take it from me… there is very little (if anything) to be worried about, sure that little pin prick hurts for a second, but you soon forget about it, and as for losing a pint of blood… your body creates more soon enough!

  17. Cape Cod Gal says:

I give blood when I can. They’re always ready for me cause I faint. I neeed a cold pack and smelling salts.

  18. Karen says:

Nice PSA! It is incredibly important taht people get out and donate, and this donation is free!
