Grooming Twitter Traffic For The Future

I'm grooming twitter traffic for the future. How many times did you hear your mother say “Sit up straight in your chair?” If you're like me, too many times to count. Not sure why I wasn't able or willing to just sit up straight, it always felt comfortable to slouch.

I'm sure you're like me in that regard, I'm sure a lot of people are.

I was thinking about this over the Memorial Day weekend that just past and came up with something that I felt was a really great idea. I want to share this with you because I think it can help to open a few eyes to the possibilities Twitter can bring a business or an individual. I believe it shows a few ways that Twitter can be used productively, provide value to followers, and potentially create a buzz and bring untold riches your way, as well as groom some traffic for you.

Ok, so perhaps the untold riches will have to wait, but this is a really great idea anyway, if I do say so myself. And grooming? What I mean by grooming twitter traffic is that by creating this account I will ultimately end up with followers that have this specific interest already. Too bad I don't know a chiropractor that I could partner with to leverage this Twitter traffic with.

Oh wait, I do! ;)

Twitter, you simply rock!

Once again, Twitter has come to the forefront of my mind. I love Twitter. I love the simple interface, I love the number of secondary applications that are being built around Twitter to increase Twitter's functionality and usefulness, and I love that it's free.

I love the fact that with a little creativity, Twitter can be used to increase targeted traffic to the site of your choice. That should make the ears of those unaware of Twitter's power perk right up.

You can drive targeted traffic to destinations of your choosing by using Twitter the way the big boys do.

Over the long weekend, I took some time to create a new account called AreYouSittingUp. Just like Twitter asks you the simple question “What are you doing?”, the AreYouSittingUp Twitter account asks you if you are sitting up straight in your chair. Every 30 minutes a humorous or to the point tweet is sent to remind the people that are interested in following that they should be sitting up in their chairs properly to ensure that improper seating positions don't end up hurting you more than necessary.

The target audience for this message is exactly everyone on Twitter or at a computer, and not any specific group of people, which makes the account potentially interesting to everyone using Twitter.

Why wouldn't you want to help increase your health and perhaps negate long-term problems associated with improper posture?

This is why I'm particularly excited about the AreYouSittingUp account. It applies to everyone. Not only that, but once I set it up, I no longer need to fuss with it. I'm pretty much done if I want to be. It will continue tweeting along, sending out a message every 30 minutes to anyone who follows, automatically, without any need for me to do anything else.

What does that mean?

That means that I could, if I choose to (and I probably won't), completely ignore this account and allow whatever to happen, happen. I don't need to be involved with it at all.

I could spend a year away from it and come back to find that it has gathered up 10k followers, or has fewer than 100 followers. Either way, the account is set up and I now have that option, which I think is really, really nice to have. After all, it only took about a hour to put together.

This account also means that if it does gain a large following, I could also establish a supporting site that speaks to various aspects of sitting up straight, and possibly make some affiliate cash by offering supporting products for sale on the site.

Twitter's a hub

In many ways, Twitter is a hub of activity. I think at this point you can say there are millions of people on Twitter, and each have their own interests and desires. Catering to a specific desire like the AreYouSittingUp account does, might be the way you can also slice yourself off some of that Twitter traffic and drive it toward the destination of your choice.

This is just one way I'm using Twitter, and if you hang out I'll share more of these ideas and methods with you. Just subscribe to my feed to keep in touch.

Tammy, always welcome, and thank you!

Dennis, well, subscribing isn’t what I actually care about with the account. Some people will subscribe to get the reminder, and that’s totally cool. The real value here is the concept of the account. How else might one use Twitter like this to grow a group of followers that meet a certain niche’s target audience?

Once you find that, you will then find yourself with followers that you can then begin to display other links and tweets too.

I think a chiropractor would love an account like this. A baker might do the same by creating a list of helpful tweets and automating those tweets to provide a benefit to the follower, and also grow their followers over time. When they are ready, and have figured out what they really want to use Twitter for, they then have a collection of followers ready to listen!

Interesting idea. I doubt I will subscribe to it though because sitting up straight the whole time might not be the best either. Personally I vary my chair posture every half hour or so, otherwise it gets too uncomfortable. I slouch, put my feet on the seat, put my legs up, sit straight etc. All kinds of stuff which is actually a form of exercise and helps with blood circulation. Or so I hope. ;o)

Thank you once again for the info, Wayne. It’s great to have you here sharing your expertise with the rest of us.

Manz, ok that’s pretty funny. I always think of Pink Floyd the wall and the school teacher. Not sure why, he never says sit up straight. Only something about pudding and meat..hehe

Carolyn, yes. There are a couple different twitter related services that when used together, can provide a great way to automate the tweets so you can walk away from it once it’s set up.

You’ll have to wait for the next Twitter post, because I honestly don’t recall at this moment the url for the site, lol.

  5. Carolyn says:

Wayne, are you saying you can set up Twitter to automatically post?

  6. Manz says:

    I’m already following :)
I must have seen a tweet from you and followed from there. As soon as I saw this post, I recognised the account!

My main memory regarding “sitting up straight” is being at school as a kid (around 7 years old) and everyone in class trying to sit up the straightest (is that a word!?) to get an early mark and go home 5 minutes before everyone else :)

Our posture was so exaggerated that I’m surprised we didn’t all tip over.
