In case you’ve been off the web for the past few days, you’ve no doubt heard that Google has finally released the +1 button code for webmasters to use on their sites and blogs. In fact, if you were on Twitter yesterday, you probably couldn’t help but see tweet after tweet about the darn thing. So what is it? Should you care?
Who really knows? I hope you don’t expect me to know all the answers.
The thing is, Google’s +1 button is brand spanking new. So new that it should raise a little concern in your mind about being one of the first to implement it. Are there going to be bugs? Will the script I’m embedding as part of the install cause my site to slow down? Is Shaquille O’Neal really retiring?
Ok, perhaps the last one you’re not so concerned with. But you get my point, right?
Implementing the latest and greatest shiny object to spring forth from some technological powerhouse isn’t always the best thing to do. It might be cool, and you can say to your friends “check this out” and all that…but really, there are problems that sometimes come with shiny new objects. You simply need to accept that there might be problems if you’re going to try to be on the cutting edge of what’s new and freshly polished.
My approach has always been one of careful consideration. Many times I’ll wait several months before I go and implement something, be it a new browser or OS, or even a social sharing button like what we have here. It’s like rolling the dice a bit, ya know? Did the developers do a good job? Did the QA (Quality Assurance) department do a good job? Was there even a QA process??? Who knows, and that’s where the risk stems from.
This time however, I’m cutting loose and getting jiggy with my buttons. You’ll see that I’ve added that shiny new object to my stack of social sharing buttons there on the left. It’s looking good all shiny and new, but like all new things, it needs to be monitored to ensure it’s working right and not causing things to break or slow down. Especially in light of Google announcing that page render speed is an important aspect of ranking.
Wouldn’t it be amusing if the new Google +1 caused sites to slow and then get dinged by their own Page Speed check?
No, you’re right. It probably wouldn’t be.
The point here is that monitoring changes that you make, especially when it involves code from somewhere other than yourself, is an important part of being a web developer/master. Staying on top of all that happens to your site is your responsibility. The last thing you want is to discover that a visitor is alerting you to something being broken or causing a problem.

For a more detailed discussion on all this, head on over to read Kristi’s post on Kikolani. She goes into some good details about it. The only thing I wanted to add here is that if it’s new, you might also consider waiting a while to allow the bugs to be exposed, if there are going to be any, and allow the button to mature a little before implementing on your site.

Normally I don’t like jumping first on the bandwagon either, but after my guest blogger wrote about trending topics, I felt inspired to try to catch the wave of this one since everyone’s talking about it. And since I don’t like to write about something I don’t use, I had to go and use it! So far, so good!
Twitter: waynejohn
I saw that you wrote that and I didn’t feel like recreating the wheel, you covered pretty much everything one needs to know. I felt an observation on being wary of the shiny new toys was a way to contribute without duplicating the discussion.
I wonder what will ultimately become of +1 though.
I’m not seeing any issues on my end either.
Hello,
I don’t mind the plus button. It is just another added visual that stands out next to your site.
Twitter: easyPblog
Just read your article Kristi – very informative.
Didn’t see the button on your site – did I just miss it?
Twitter: easyPblog
Sorry Kristi
Just found the +1 button on your site.
Blind as a bat!
Thats good for webmasters, it might replace like button in future. At the moment +1 button is avaliabe for all websites, but the +1 on search results is for english results from google.com only. As they (google) said they will add this feature in other languages soon and I hope they will do this soon, so foreign sites can take full advantage of this.
Has anyone experienced any benefits to adding this to their website? I get worried adding yet another piece of google code to my website. I don’t use google analytics because it don’t like the idea of them knowing that much information about my site.
Twitter: waynejohn
It’s too new to say. After a few weeks/months, I might have a good idea of the impact.
I don’t think there is anything to fear about Google…but I too have created sites that I never wired up with Google, and they did OK. Google still knows about your site whether you like it or not.
Good to have you here Laney! Cheers!
Yeah, I added the +1 Button, and it didn’t do any measurable influence on the performance of my site. So feel free to add it, too

Hi Wayne
“I hope you don’t expect me to know all the answers.”
But we do Wayne. LOL
Hang back on this one then.
A bit like Wordpress upgrades… only not so frequent.
I’ll head over to Kristi’s post and find out what it is.
Cheers Wayne
Twitter: waynejohn
Hahaha, like that? It’s more about putting your mind in the right mindset really. Do I need this? Should I wait a bit? These are things that we should always ask ourselves when anything new comes out. Too many people are eager to get the latest and greatest stuff, and while it’s fun and all that to play with shiny new objects, I think it’s best to keep a rational perspective on things. That’s all I’m really saying in this post.
Cheers Keith!
Twitter: easyPblog
Thanks Wayne
I’ll hang back, but in simple terms this button appears to be a vote for your site so long term we will be forced to use it.
Has Google said that the votes will be fed back into the SERPS?
Twitter: waynejohn
I honestly don’t know enough about it yet to know either way. I’m rolling with it for now and will dive deeper after some time has passed. Of course, I’ll share my findings here.
Twitter: easyPblog
Cheers Wayne.

This seems to be one of the biggest tech stories this week.. the +1 thing keeps popping up everywhere. I also tend to wait for a time before implementing new software for the reasons you mentioned. These things haven’t always been beta-tested as much as they should be, and are rushed out the door. Everyone gets excited and employs them right away. The +1 thing is nifty though and I’ve also been using it.
PS: you sure like the word “shiny”! lol
greg
Twitter: waynejohn
Hahahaha, yeah. I over-used that a bit, but I was trying to embed that word in people’s heads too. Shiny new things aren’t always good, yet we seem to automatically associate then as such in our heads. At least, I do, until I chew on it a bit.
I just saw a website the other day with that +1 … I didn’t know what it was about until I read your post! Thank you for explaining this new Google element.
John
This is the third blog post I have seen dealing with the google 1 post! I really need to get on the ball here and start up with using it. Man, when google makes a move, everyone feels it, right? Great post anyway as you covered some points others missed I believe.
Twitter: waynejohn
Thanks, I didn’t want to echo what everyone else was doing. That gets tiring. lol
I can understand that! Quality content is what separates the good bloggers from the bad. Thanks for going the extra mile.
But I think it would be strange if a blogger hadn’t written a post about such a great Google improvement. However, sometimes it is more important how to present the information. Thanks for a great article, Wayne!
Hi Wayne, I’ve always enjoyed reading your post. It’s very informative and fresh. Keep it coming.

I want to add +1 button, but I am waiting for my plugin update of sharingissexy,as I do not want to add the code for myself

I have just implemented +1 on my website too
Great article by the way!
Twitter: waynejohn
Thanks, Lukas. Let me know if you find anything special about +1.
It is a simpler version of FaceBook ‘Like’ button but it is equally effective.I am installing it on one of my blog.
Twitter: waynejohn
Simpler in that you don’t leave the screen?
Twitter: pwweddingfavors
Hi Wayne,
I have never heard of the google +1. I just +1′d this post to try the new Google service.
I’m wondering though if this can affect the site’s pr and SE rankings… maybe not for now but how about in the future?
Twitter: waynejohn
Time will tell. It’s too new to really know.
Twitter: w3blogdk
I am afraid that it will be abused, because Google has said that it has an impact on SERP. But the fact that it has an impact on serp I´ve installed it on my blog yesterday, so there is nothing to do but wait and see what time will bring.!
But one thing I could use on it, is to be able to see how has given my website a +1. Like you can check om twitter.
Yes, it will just provide more social proof if readers see that others have “plussed” your article. However, I intend to read the Terms to see exactly what kind of info Google can mine from your site.
Twitter: waynejohn
If anything stands out, can I ask that you clue us in as to what you find?
Twitter: waynejohn
There’s always a chance for abuse, right? One way or another, people will find a way I’m sure.
Twitter: AboriginalMama
You know it all, and you know we know you know it all, Wayne. =)
You bring up a really good point about always being curing-edge: you’re also on the cutting edge of the bugs and techo-hiccups when new tech has a brain fart. (Am I allowed to say “brain fart” here?? lol) My inner Luddite is always happy to watch it for a while and see how it’s working for others before I give it a go. Saves me the trouble of dealing with bugs and downtime.
Delena
Twitter: waynejohn
Shhh…don’t tell anyone! And yes, brain fart is a perfectly acceptable here…. We do brain droppings and brain farting around here all the time.
I’ve actually been offline for a few days and have missed that they have released this feature
Do you notice any performance differences on your site?
Twitter: dayafterstore
Google, it seems to me, is constantly trying to keep pace with or one-up (pun intended) Facebook in the “social” arena. This – along with Orkut, Google Bookmarks, etc. – is just another step in that direction…
Twitter: waynejohn
It seems that simple doesn’t it. No conspiracy theories on your end? haha
Google has now been in very much demand much after their +1 release as now they are now strong competitors to Facebook for their ‘like’ options!! I am very happy to know that Google is now in the market!! This is a really nice article!! Thanks Wayne.
Twitter: FSYAonline
I’m still considering implementing the plus one on my blog. I personally am not sure if I would even use it so it’s hard for me to see others really wanting to sign in to their Google account just to say they like something. Especially when it’s not in a central place like Facebook where you can control the privacy settings. I think I’ll pass for now.
It’ll be interesting to see how long this takes to catch on. Adding the Facebook Like button to websites only worked because everyone knew what it was from being Facebook users themselves.
Outside of Internet marketing circles I doubt anyone has a clue what Google’s +1 is all about.
Twitter: pythonskynetyahoo.com
If someone logged in while searching on Google, then “plus one” button shows the plus’d article…
Big guys gains from this
Well, I heard about google +1 thing but haven’t considered it seriously yet. I guess I need to start with adding a button on my site. But I guess the +1 numbers on search results are available only in the US at the moment, am I wrong? Because I don’t see them on my local search.
By the way, nice redesign Wayne.
Im kind of embarresed to say that i have no clue about Google +1 apart from the fact that it came out a few days ago. But thanks for helping to clear things up for me abit more Wayne. Im hoping to learn alot more about it, and of course i’ll keep checking back to your site
P.S nice neon sidebars!
Twitter: waynejohn
Why thanks!
“What’s your sign?”
“Neon!”
Ok, so I have added +1 to a test blog of mine just to test drive it for awhile. Lets see what happens!
Twitter: waynejohn
Seems that Google +1 and IE8 aren’t working together. Even on the Google’s blog it fails in IE8. http://googleblog.blogspot.com/2011/03/1s-right-recommendations-right-when-you.html

Your posts never cease to put a smile on my face
About Google’s +1 Button: I guess only time will tell. Like you say, who really knows whether we should care about it? With Google, it always seems like a crapshoot.
Just out of curiosity (and because I don’t know that much about it yet), are you using the new commentluv plugin?
Twitter: waynejohn
Well that’s awesome then. I enjoy making people smile.
Yes, that is the CommentLuv plugin you see in the comments. You won’t see much difference from a users perspective aside from the graphic that is different. I know that you probably know Kristi at Kikolani.com, she has a good write up on the details of it.
Twitter: tecbloggers
Thanks for that Wayne, I am looking to put a +1 button on Technology Bloggers now
Twitter: tecbloggers
…and here we have it!
Check out one of our latest posts and let me know what you think of the button
Sir, I am interested to put this button on each of my blog post. I just wonder how to set this up. I see so many bloggers are already using this button. I’d really like this one to be on my blog. I am using a blogger platform. How do I put this to my blog? Sorry, I am just a new blogger, I started a month ago, that is why I am so noob with this thing. Thank you so much!
Twitter: waynejohn
Oh don’t call me Sir, I work for a living.
If you want to add Google’s +1 button to Blogger, here’s a link that will help: http://buzz.blogger.com/2011/06/add-1-button-to-your-blog.html If you need help beyond that, just let me know.
Cheers!
Thanks for the info about Google +1 Button, I don’t trust new things that much so I think I will wait and see what happens with this before implementing it.
Will keep an eye on your site for more info.
Hi Wayne,
I like the point you made about the Google +1 being shiny and new and that there might be problems that comes with it and it might be better to wait and see first. I think bloggers and site owners are scrambling to install it because of the concern that it might affect the SERP. Many are also concerned that others will try to game the system although it’s not yet clear how they’ll do that.
By the way, I thought the plugin is automatically installed on Blogger blogs. My friend is using the Blogger platform and she just noticed that it’s already there without her doing anything.
Anyway, thanks for the advice. I’ll also do my own monitoring.
Twitter: waynejohn
Heh, if Blogger automatically adds functionality to a blog, I’d question staying there. What if you didn’t want it???
That’s a good point, Wayne. My friend was in fact surprised when she woke up, her blog already has the plugin but she’s keeping it.
I think we will see the most difference in Serps when a friend likes a certain site. But in time i think we will see sites that have alot of likes will in general have a higher Serp position
Hi Wayne,
Nice post.I have already seen Google +1 implemented at a few blogs and its really excellent thing to have.It adds more vakue and makes the different blogs more competitive.
It is a same version of FaceBook ‘Like’ button but it is somehow effective.I am installing it on one of my blog. I have install after reading your blog post. your all post are my favorite and superb. thanks. My prayer are with you.
-Sarq
I dont know for sure but wouldnt this make the whole system a lot easier to game?
Twitter: waynejohn
The jury is still out on that one. I’m sure we’ll know if it’s possible though. People can be creative, right?
It looks like some major changes are going to take shape because first it was Twitter’s new follow button then came facebook’s Send Button and now we have Google’s +1 button. It took me two attempts to learn more about the +1 button and also took a long time to decide where to place it
I’m also still curious whether we can use multiple buttons on a single page?
Twitter: waynejohn
I believe you should be able to. I’d make sure that I’m not duplicating the same code in that case…both buttons should be able to use one associated js code file.
Hi Wayne
I think that this button is just another “like” button, but it is the first time that google really asks for action. And that could change the SEO strategies (as we knew until now) entirely.
Just got this recommendation from google. Still not sure what it is going to do. Clicked on yours, hope it will help
Twitter: waynejohn
Well thanks!
Twitter: barrywheeler
Are you noticing the initial rush of Google+ adopters has slowed? I’m not seeing much expansion in my circles and now find that I’m still having to go back to Facebook to interact with a lot of people.
Do you think Google will eventually compete? Why the slow takeup?
Twitter: waynejohn
I try not to involve myself with things like that, since time will tell everything. Trying to guess is foolhardy imo…and honestly, there’s going to be another service coming eventually…there will always be that.
I think I’ve become a bit cynical on social sites. I don’t even participate in them that much these days. I’d be more than interested in hearing your take on these things though.
I’m very curious to see how Google + will affect SERPs for those sites that are recommended highly. I bet that is where Google will want to improve relevancy, no?
