I’m still building out the syllabus for this years series on building a web site, but in the meantime I wanted to let you know that I’ve re-enabled comments for all posts.
I had turned them off since after the initial “hurrah” of a new post, the only comments that tend to trickle in are those from spammers…but! There are a few that are valid and good comments, so I decided to give it another go and see what happens. So far, I think I have only received spam, but I still need to sort through those new comments.
In addition to turning the comments back on, I’ve also added the ability to rate a comment. The idea is that eventually I’ll modify the ratings to hide particular comments that seem to just be completely negative in ratings. While this could potentially open up a completely new set of problems, I thought I’d give it a try anyway to see what happens.
So with the new archive page in place, you should be able to troll a lot of my older posts and leave your own comments there too. I think if you do enough digging and searching around here, you might find a couple posts that have risen in PR over time, and might be a great place to leave a comment with a link to your site.
As for the ratings, each and every comment is now ratable. If you see a comment from someone you like, give them a thumbs up. If you see some spam that you don’t like, give it a thumbs down. Don’t agree with someone, thumbs down. Agree? Thumbs up. Easy right?
I’ll still monitor each and every comment that passes through here, I don’t think I’ll ever allow this blog to get to the point where the spammers have taken control, but this is a great opportunity to get your links on a few of my “better” pages.
It’s up to you to find them.

For an established blog closing off comments may be fine, for newbies such as myself comments are good source of additional traffic. I find that the spam protector generally does a good job of filtering them into the blocked area (I am amazed at the number!)
To Kai Lo’s point, however, somehow some of them seem to be escaping the jaws of the spam filter. I just had such an example today …. just a link to their e.commerce site as a comment and it was on one of my older posts. Of course I deleted it but wondered if maybe I should have marked it as spam. What is your suggestion?

I think the rating system might not be the best idea. Some people will just vote down a comment just for fun. Also, I recommend closing commenting on old posts because those are targeted the most by spammers.

You might be right, but I’m on top of all comments that are here. It’s time to see what happens since I’ve had them shut off for an entire year.

Yeah, for most of last year, I decided to turn em off to combat spam. Unfortunately, that means that good people like yourself cannot comment either.
Now that comments are back on, I wonder what this might mean for the traffic patterns on my older posts.
Do you think they’ll get more traffic after commentators have “refreshed” the page with new comment? Or will the traffic remain pretty much the same?
Time will tell.

That’s great! I was wanting to leave a comment on a post the other day, but found I couldn’t due to it’s age… now if I could only remember what that post was and what I wanted to say!!

Those aren’t always the ones that Google favors. Some of my posts have made PR 2, a few are PR1 etc.
I usually base a posts greatness on the PR value for that particular page. I could be wrong, but I think I’m correct in thinking this way about it.
Looks like you have already done the work, to show your most popular blog post “Most Talked About” widget in the footer.
The real ? would be, does Google SERP see things the same way?
I know I’ve always been surprised on my own blogs, sometimes I’ll think I know which blog post is my best, then I find out Google has other ideas of which post is the better one…
