When do you call in sick to work? As different as people are, so are the the reasons and excuses people use when calling in sick to work. I’ve decided for myself that if I am contagious in any way, I’ll call in sick. Regardless of how I feel, if I am contagious, I don’t want to help spread any little bugs to others.
This week has also shown me some real reasons to watch what I eat. I came down with food poisoning in the middle of the week, and it really threw off my entire schedule. Thankfully, I’ve had a few posts in queue that helped me get through the week, although, they were not necessarily complete in my eyes. I hope you found them informative enough.
The only thing I can nail down that might have made me sick is a 3×3 from In & Out Burger. I noticed as I ate my wonderful three layer cheeseburger at lunch on Wednesday was a nice little pink layer in the middle of one of my burgers. I thought I would be fine…I was wrong.
In & Out is the only thing I had different than those around me so that makes it suspect. While I still don’t know for sure, it’s the best I have to go on.
I awoke at 3:38 AM the next day with a mouthful, and I won’t get any more detailed other to say that I was beginning the process of purging everything in my system. What a wonderful feeling to awake with the process of purging already beginning. ugh…
I meet up with my savior, the porcelain throne again at 6:30 AM. A smidgen earlier than my normal waking time, but again, the ugly side of nature was calling again.
Disappointingly I call in sick to work, something I really don’t like to do. I will however, when there is really no point in me coming in. If my head is pounding from a migraine, I call in. I won’t try to push myself through a migraine at all. I need my brain firing on all cylinders to be able to write code. Minor headaches are alright, but a migraine is debilitating when you are working on logical structures and decision trees. It simply sucks.
I’ll also call in sick to work if I won’t be able to sit for extended periods of time without heading to the restroom. I find there is nothing more embarrassing than have those issues, so I just avoid them and work things out at home. I’m sure other co-workers would be quite glad I made that decision too.
The final reason I’ll call in sick is because I’m coming down with the flu or some contagion. If there is something pressing, I would probably show up and do what needs to be done, but most times that isn’t the norm. There is usually time tomorrow or the next day for the projects I work on.
Don’t get me wrong, emergencies are emergencies and I take care of those as expeditiously as possible. However, when there isn’t a fire to put out or deadline to meet, I’ll call in without concern. I know that by calling in, I’m helping to stop the spread of the virus to my co-workers, and thus helping to eliminate even more downtime in other areas of the business.
For those of you who have subscribed and are frequent readers of my blog, thank you for hanging in there during my downtime. I’m feeling much better, now 5 days later, to resume posting and get caught up on everything that fell behind these past days. And boy is there a lot of stuff for my to catch up on…

i have to agree –
you are of no use to anyone if you have a migraine – and the sooner you attend to it, the sooner you’ll recover…
and it is in your employer’s best interest to have you firing on all cylinders

@Tammy – Thanks!
Glad to hear that you are feeling better.
@GoteeMan – I hear ya, I’m glad everything made it through my little disruption. Thanks for swinging by and commenting!
@Dana – Wow! Can surgeon’s take care of lawyers too? Hope everything turned out ok for ya. Tonights post is your’s Dana, let me know how it works for ya.
@Leslie – Sigh, I really should, but I know what it will do to me. I really enjoy my fast food, and like my smoking, something I need to curb before the big 40 hits. I saw super-size me, does that count?
I think that would be a great, motivational way to get the job done…I just may do it.
Kudos to you for calling in sick when you are contagious or even think you might be. It makes me crazy when people come to the office sick. I hate being sick! And you gotta read Fast Food Nation if you haven’t already.
I left work once, in an ambulance, and landed for a two week stay at the hacienda hospital. Guess who my first visitor was? My boss, with an armload of paperwork that he layed on my bed. My surgeon walked in at that precise moment………..AND THREW HIM AND THE PAPERS OUT OF THE HOSPITAL!!
Well, since I work@home, I pretty much work unless I am in bad shape… one of the bummers of WAH…

@Demeur – I believe you could do it, worth a try at least. If you don’t mind your site possibly looking askew for a few minutes at a time (probably will be much less, seconds perhaps, but still, it’s a possible interruption), you could test your changes incrementally.
Just make a change, then use the ‘Preview’ link, that will open a new window for you and display your changes. If your changes are good and you want to keep them, go back and save the template, or be daring and make more.
Also re-check your blog after you save!
You can also make a copy of the entire text and put it in notepad (or the mac equiv.), so you can simply wipe and replace with the original text if your efforts fail. Sometimes trial and error is a great teacher, as long as you know how to reverse whatever changes you are doing if you muck things up. Let me know what happens!
Just wondering. Is it possible to edit the html of the layout template and not have any conflicts with eblogger. It looks like I could change the widths in the code but I’m afraid of having the whole blog crash if I start screwing with it. My philosophy “if it ain’t broke don’t fix it.”
@Gary – Question, if this is ‘The Wayne Look’, what will the next one be called ‘Wayne Showing Off’? hahaha
@Demeur – Yeah, you have a template issue. The main issue is that you are stuck into a 800px(?) width template, where it sound’s like you would rather have a 100% width template. See if you can find something you like and let me know what it is. I’ll see what I can do for you.
@Alex – Thanks! lol…every body counted, that’s pretty funny. I’ve been in major recovery 3 times before, and each time I ended up over recovering…if that is even possible…
Love the new layout! Very clean and easy to read.
I used to work in the horribly mismanaged and perpetually understaffed field of retail pharmacy where every body counted. And I mean that literally. Every. Body. Counted. Ususally pills, but sometimes change. I only every called in sick if my kid was sick, because I couldn’t take her to day-care/school if she was running a temp.
Is it any wonder that after 12 years of that crap I went a tiny bit insane? I say I’m “unemployed” right now, but really I’m in recovery.
I’ve only been out of work (sick call) about three times in the last 20 years. The last time I had the misfortune of having about 80 lbs of bricks fall on my foot. They wanted me to go to work and do light duty and I would have gone but it was just too painful.
The new format is okay but for one thing. Yours like mine has a lot of empty real estate along the sides. I just wish I could use that space.
Hey I really like your new layout and style—and really like that you have moved away from the old black text on stark white background, this looks very professional yet has a distinct originality look to it—-lets call it –(wait for it)—-”THE WAYNE LOOK”

Thanks everyone!
Adam, yes, but I haven’t set up the connectivity yet and tested it out. That’s on my plate for this week so next time I’ll be ready.
Do you have opportunity to telecommute? I really hate getting food poisoning. Glad to hear you are feeling better though.
I have been known to call in sick for mental health reasons. Given that I work in a medical office, Any chance that may vomit or worse means absolutely buys a day off.
Glad to hear you are better. I have had food poisoning. Not nice!
Thanks BakerWatson, I am feeling much better now. A few times I sat down to try to write something and ended up staring blankly at the screen without a single thought on what to write.
I decided to take some time away and rest. Things will be better all around when I do that.
I noticed you were absent a bit over the past few days. Sorry to hear of your problems but glad to hear they seem to be settled for now.
