Ask me anything, and I’ll respond

I feel inspired to ask you, the reader, if you had anything you might ask me, what would it be?

I’m opening myself and my blog up to my readers to see if there are any questions that you’d might like to ask me.  It can be anything, really.

Want to know my thoughts on politics, religion, sex, drugs, music, women, ask!

Want to know my thoughts about other bloggers?  Ask.

Want to know how I feel about one programming language over another?  Ask.

Want to know what I think of your site?  Ask at your own peril.

I’ll answer everything with brutal honesty, so if you don’t like my response, don’t be offended, I’m just being honest.  How could you fault someone over that?

So as you can see, I’m leaving myself wide open for you to ask me anything.  Anything at all.  Since I don’t have the inspiration to write something technical or helpful, perhaps if I opened myself up to readers and random strangers (and of course, the spammers, you know they’ll comment with some absurdity), perhaps I would find my voice again through this effort.

Here’s what you do, leave a comment below, and if there is a question in there that is an honest question, and not some spammy type of question  just because I’m asking you to leave a question, I’ll answer it in a post.

I’ll continue to draw upon the questions you leave here for future posts.

I intend on approving each and every comment on this post here, instead of being a comment Nazi like I have been for every other post.

I’m expecting spammers to comment, and in fact I intend on using the comments left by spammers for another purpose entirely.  So comment away spammers…this is your post.

But I do hope that the spammers are out-numbered by actual people that have a “good” question.  We’ll see what happens.

    Wayne! I am already very grateful to you for sharing your experience with me. Thanks alot. I m just left stuck with a couple of things.

    1) I want an author box like at kioklani.com and shoutmeloud.com in which i would write about myself and also appreciate comments form people and tell them about my dofollow comment system.
    2) Secondly, I want my comments to be nested like at you site every reply is nested to the original comment. Although I have turned on Nested comments at my settings panel but still, you can have a look of my replied comment at this page
    http://www.insidehacks.com/blogging/dofollow-blogs-list
    3) Third one is just a tiny bit :) . I just love the way subtitles are presented on shoutmeloud. They put the subheadings within a box like
    http://www.shoutmeloud.com/5-free-mind-mapping-web-applications.html

    If you know about plugins or any article which can help me in doing these three customizations on my web then let me know please. I ll be grateful to you :) Thanks in advance

      1: Couldn’t that be done with a simple text widget? Simply type your text, link to your about page or any other, done.

      2: Not all themes support nested comments. If your doesn’t, then you’ll need to modify the comments.php file to make that happen.

      3: If by subheadings you mean quote blocks, then some css will help you style it into what you want for your site. In the case of ShoutMeLoud, then are adding a class tag to the paragraph element.

      So class=”note”:

      .custom .format_text p.note {
      -moz-background-clip:border;
      -moz-background-inline-policy:continuous;
      -moz-background-origin:padding;
      -moz-border-radius-bottomleft:4px;
      -moz-border-radius-bottomright:4px;
      -moz-border-radius-topleft:4px;
      -moz-border-radius-topright:4px;
      background:#E3F0F2 url(images/note.png) no-repeat scroll 7px 50%;
      border:1px solid #66CCCC;
      padding:10px 10px 10px 45px;
      text-align:left;
      }

      I might not have given you exactly how to do these things, but hopefully enough for you to dig in and figure it all out! Cheers!

    The second and my last question is about backlinks. I do exhchange links with bloggers, banner exchange, comments on do follow blogs, but one problem arose.
    There are many backlinks active on blogs for my web and many are from PR 2 and PR3 pages. but when I check my backlinks via different online tools, mostly backlinkwatch.com then only a few of them are shown and strangely links which are displayed are just from PR 0. I dont know where are the other backlinks wandering.

    So kindly tell me which is the omst accurate way to check backlinks. And when will my higher PRs backlinks will be shown by backlink check tools. Thanks (wont disturn you later :) )

      You’re not going to like what I have to say about this. I ignore backlinks completely in preference of allowing things to happen naturally. It’s what Google expects as they discourage many of the linking schemes designed to fool Google into thinking something is popular by the masses, when in fact it’s just one person that believes it should be popular and have more traffic. So I can’t speak to backlinkwatch at all.

      This page here (http://googlewebmastercentral.blogspot.com/2007/02/discover-your-links.html) discusses the various ways to discover who’s linking to you. WebMaster tools display backlinks as well. I just don’t buy into all those “tools” used to manipulate Google in any way.

    Well thats a great way to promote blogging….
    My first question is that every one says we need high PageRank for better SEO. Well one can get high PR for domain but how can we make high PR for each and individual post? I mean if you have 700 articles on your blogs then you need to work for backlinks for each post ???

    • Wayne - Twitter:
      says:

      I noticed a few of my older posts have PR2-3, yet a lot of them don’t get a bunch of traffic, so imo, it comes right back to keywords and how often your article matches those searches.

      If you have 700 pages of content, interlinking between those articles can help, as well as external linking to them.

      As for your site, I wonder how much negativity Google might place on words like “Hack”, especially when some of the content instructs on possible malicious activity. Not saying that’s what you have, it could be misconstrued as such.

      But then, who really knows what happens with Google…lol

            He wanted to ask about the policy regarding Copy pasting content from other blogs to your blog. To my knowledge, you should provide dofollow backlink to the source at the end of post. when you copy content and publish it to your blog.
            1) Kindly explain the real policy regarding it,
            2) secondly tell me the effects of (duplicated) copy pasted stuff on SEO.
            3) And lastly how much dangerous copy pasting can be, can Adsense or the source blog from which you are stealing stuff can block your site on copy pasting?

              Copying an entire piece is never cool. Taking parts of a story to provide context to a secondary story is fine with proper attribution to the original author. Everyone makes up their own rules as they go, there are no hard and fast rules, unless you are talking about a corporate blog, then you get all kinds of legal sticky stuff involved…

              I think the effects should be obvious, you’ll only hurt your domain, and perhaps the source. Although, I think Google has become smart enough to be able to tell who owns the original piece.

              Stealing content isn’t worth it, period. Whatever short-term gain one might achieve is just that, short-term. might as well grow a brain and write for oneself, right? lol

    Thomas, for a single wordpress blog post? I would add an entry into your .htaccess file to perform the redirect. When I migrated to WordPress from BlogEngine.net, I had to establish a lengthy set of redirs for every page in my blog. Was fun…to some degree, lol. Here is a single entry I placed in my .htaccess file to redir my privacy.aspx page to the WordPress instance of my privacy page.

    redirect 301 /privacy.aspx http://www.waynejohn.com/privacy

    The first part is relative, where the second is a full path. I’m not the expert on Linux or PHP, but this worked for me.

    Hope that helps!

    Haworth, next years goals are set around December time for me. I usually take a look back at the past year and decide a few things:

    1. Is there anything I need to learn?
    2. Did I achieve the goals I set for myself this year, if not, will I continue to work towards them?

    If I were to take an initial shot at what I’d want to happen next year, I’d like to get my butt on a Harley and ride it across the United States. Coast to coast. That what I would like to see happen next year for myself. Will that happen? Probably not.

    I’d need a few months off from work, or be able to do work while on the road. I’m not seeing myself in a position to do that just yet, but I’m trying hard to make that a reality I’ll experience one day.

    Thanks, it’s a delicate subject for sure. One that always requires a little explanation.

    Let’s see, the quick and dirty on each:

    1. Yes, search engines still use the keywords meta tags, but Google has stated that they don’t give them much weight in overall ranking. Primarily due to being able to manipulate them so easily. I’d still include them, but if I forgot to put them in there, I wouldn’t lose any sleep over it either.

    2. There is, there are tools that will do this. I’ll find them and write on them.

    3. I was 15 or 16. I did the ring tattoo with a machine that we made out of parts. That’s a good post in itself.

    4. Two. Only two of the motor variety. The first was a Kawasaki LTD 550 that I taught myself to ride while it rained constantly. I was in Virginia while in the Navy and bought it to get around. Ended up leaving it on the pier. The second one was my Suzuki Blvd. I’m ready for my third now.

    5. You know it!

    6. Probably about $1500 over the course of a trip. I never let myself get too crazy.

    7. Yes and no. I’ll leave those details to a post should I choose to expose the family.

    I’m loving the variety! Halifax, I think it’s bullshit. I also think it shows how many gullible people there are out there. I also think that any rules put in place now, will ultimately be worthless in the future.

    There is a very large segment of users that still don’t understand the parts that make up a website, so it’s hard for them to know what’s an ad, and what’s content.

    Add to that the trust provided to celebrity bloggers, and maybe you do have a problem.

    I think they’d would better serve the public at large if they paid more attention to the kickbacks that government officials receive instead of mom & pop and little Tommy blogger.

    Interesting subject, I’ll have to dig a little more into that.

    Virginia, oh population control, where to begin. Well, let me start by saying that the population growth rate scares the crap out of me. It’s straight up on the graph. That cannot be good for us as a specie nor the world in general. So I do believe we as individuals need to practice some form of reasoning when it comes to birthing offspring.

    We are a wise enough culture to do so, however seeing the fascination around Jon & Kate and Octo-mom seriously makes me wonder if anyone even cares about the subject, much more even considers the damage it could ultimately cause to the earth.

    I believe the story you laid out is unavoidable. Our food is diminishing, the water is drying up, we’re spouting more and more pollution into the air…did I mention the population graph is pointing straight up? Oh yeah, sure did.

    I see this as a time of exponential change. Damaging change that will change the face of the world forever. Personally, I don’t want to be part of the problem, it’s a major reason why I decided to never have children. I’m not willing to contribute when there are so many doing so with ill regard to their actions.

    There are other reasons for my own personal actions on this, but as far as the government pressing that agenda, it sound laced with right-wing conspiracy. While thinking about this though, I also think that when the time comes for something like this to be put in place, you’ll be more worried about where your next meal will be coming from, and staying safe from danger to really care what the “powers that be” are doing.

    When there is little food to go around, why would you allow people to bring even more people into the tribe? Those are the “extreme conditions” he’s speaking about. With no food, it’s highly illogical to bring more “food requiring” people into the world.

    People have shown that they don’t control themselves, so yeah, I’d agree with John Holdren about that. But I think he’s a number of years ahead of himself if he plans on anything being initiated.

    I see it as inevitable.

  23. virginia says:

    I know you agree with population control/overpopulation. What do you think of this clip?

    White House science czar John Holdren has called for the United States to surrender sovereignty to a “Planetary Regime” armed with sufficient military power to enforce population limits on nations as a means of preventing a wide range of perceived dangers from global eco-disasters involving Earth’s natural resources, climate, atmosphere and oceans.

    As previously reported, WND has obtained and reviewed a copy of the 1970s college textbook “Ecoscience: Population, Resources, Environment” that Holdren co-authored with Malthusian population alarmist Paul R. Ehrlich and Ehrlich’s wife, Anne. The authors argued that involuntary birth-control measures, including forced sterilization, may be necessary and morally acceptable under extreme conditions, such as widespread famine brought about by “climate change.”

    On page 943, the authors recommended the creation of a “Planetary Regime” created to act as an “international superagency for population, resources, and environment.”

    I’ve just finished a teacher’s certification course. As is to be expected, part of the last day of classes consisted of filling out an evaluation of the program content and the trainers.

    We were asked to sign these evaluations with our full name.

    I gave my honest opinion regarding a particular trainer who lacked confidence and (so-it-seemed) experience in certain training modules. I had a good relationship with this man, but myself and other students had noted his unusually heavy reliance on his notes while teaching.

    Unfortunately for me, this man read my comments shortly after classes adjourned and confronted me immediately. “After all I did for you,” he said, “How could you write those things in your evaluation?”

    I was blindsided by this confrontation, and I haven’t fully recovered. My questions are as follows:

    If, as you indicate, you are predisposed to direct criticism (as I am), have you ever experienced conflict like the experience I just related to you?

    What is your perspective about giving and receiving criticism? Might you have any tips or perspective for me to recover from this incident? Do you have advice for giving criticism in the future?

    Was this man unprofessional in his emotional confrontation with me?

    Thanks for any perspective you might be willing to share.

    “I don’t need to do a post on this one now do I?”

    Sure, go ahead & do a new blog post about Meta Tags :) , I need all the info I can get.

    I’m a Google Webmaster Tools fan, & check my blogs often. My blogger blogs all have no errors, so all is good. I’m thinking Google has setup something special to prevent errors for duplicate blogspot blogs Meta Tags.

    My goal is to create unique meta tags for each Blogger hosted webpage, to optimize/tweak the Google Title+Description SERP results. This is all automatic after the new code install in the template, & can be re-arranged to show the results that you want in the Google SERP descriptions.

    Like I said, I already have this up & running on my blog, every blog page has it’s own Meta Tags, no 2 are the same.

    I actually have a wordpress blog that I use for cms, & keep getting drawn back to my older blogger/blogspot blogs, I think because it’s more of a challenge to tweak (I know that sounds crazy lol).

    Anyway, thanks for the great feedback on my ?’s :)

    I’ll send you more info @ your contact page.

    Thanks,

  29. Switcher says:

    LOL, :)

    I don’t count myself as a spammer, I’ll ask anyway.

    What’s your thoughts on “Meta Tags” for blogger/blogspot.com?

    The reason I ask is, from an SEO point of view I’ve had the idea for a while to write some code, that will write dynamic content for each & every blog page on my Blogger blog.

    I have the code up & running, & actually showing up in the Google SERP, I really don’t have any answers for a long term results. Do you think this would be something that would benefit Blogger hosted blogs?

    Ok, let’s hear your thoughts, don’t hold back! LOL :)

    • Wayne - Twitter:
      says:

      Switcher, interesting first comment, awesome. It’s been a while since I’ve played with Blogger, but I’m quite familiar with how Google uses meta tags. I’m actually a little shocked to learn that Blogger (Google owned, right) would start a blog off with something that Google will ultimately penalize you for.

      Anything that makes each page in a site or blog different and unique will make that site better in terms of ranking in search engines. While having one page that is the same as another in the scope of a hundred pages isn’t all that bad, it will be noted by Google that these two pages have the same title and description. If Google marks that as duplicate content and imposes a penalty for that, I don’t know to what extent that penalty might impact the site and rankings, but you’d surely see the error in Google Webmaster tools. And, it should be corrected.

      If Blogger doesn’t naturally provide differing meta for each page, then you will surely be better off if you can finangle the blog to do so. Like I said, it’s been a while since I’ve played with blogger.

      Hell, I don’t need to do a post on this one now do I? When you finalize that code, share the news with me and I’ll check it out, maybe help you promote it a little. Good start to the post, thanks!
