So you have a blog or site, and you thought that by adding some AdSense ads to your site you would start to see some revenue from those ads, but your not. What went wrong? Why aren’t people clicking on your ads? Are you wasting your time, or did you do something wrong?
You can have someone look at your site and make some recommendations, but like the old saying goes, everyone has their own opinions and strategies for securing a little AdSense revenue. There are, however, some things that are true regardless of who you speak to that can help to increase your AdSense revenue.
Here are some of my own ways to increase AdSense revenue that I feel work the best.
- When you create a page or post, be mindful of your page title in the browser and the page itself. Learn what it means to optimize your page title.
- The keywords or key-phrase you are targeting should be the most prevalent in the page or post, but not to the point of obnoxiousness. Remain relevant, provide solid information, but craft the text in such a way to show search engine spiders what your most important keywords are.
- Be mindful of the type of people who might be searching for your particular topic on the page or post. Are these people that would normally click an ad? Don’t expect to get many (if any) clicks from traffic coming from social sites like Twitter or Facebook. Social traffic usually understands the difference between and ad and a link to more content, so unless the ad unit is displaying something that really intrigues them, they’re not going to click. (Here is a post I put together that describes the various types of Internet traffic)
- Get the highest search engine ranking that you can for your targeted keywords or key-phrase in Google, Yahoo, Bing and Ask. I recently wrote on how to get indexed by these search engines, but you’ll also want to know how to increase your search engine rankings.
- Place your ad unit in positions that are likely to be seen by visitors. Here is a great post by Harsh on the subject.
- Make search traffic your highest priority. Like mentioned above, social traffic rarely clicks on ad units. The more search traffic you have flowing through the page or post, the better your chances of getting more ad unit clicks.
- Create pages that rank well for ads that advertisers are paying more $ for. You will earn less than what an advertiser pays for a particular keyword or key-phrase. The more they are willing to pay, the more you will earn per click. You can get an idea of what advertisers are paying, as well as potential traffic and competition for keywords by using the Google AdWords Keyword Tool.
- You can purchase a domain name* that uses your keywords or key-phrase and establish a site or blog that focuses on those keywords. By creating a match on the domain name to your keywords, I firmly believe that search engines will give you more juice. Find a good domain name, and try it out. They cost less than $10, and when you get the right keywords, the traffic can pay for the cost within the first couple months.
- Learn and implement search engine optimization techniques, otherwise it’s like throwing darts in the dark. Sometimes you’ll hit, sometimes you won’t. There are software packages* that will help you get over the hump faster for a little money.
- Find keywords that are highly searched for, but whose top 10 or 20 sites in search results would be easy to beat with a little SEO magic.
Following these 10 items will help you see an increase in your AdSense click-throughs. I feel comfortable sharing this with you now that I’ve had a chance to go “around the block” with this stuff myself. Over time, these items keep recurring and making their point well known to me.
* These items are product links that I have explored and approve of and either use, or would use for my own purposes.

I was going to mention that chanting with a bone in my nose seems to drum up more visitors and clicks, but then I realize that those visitors expect dancing clowns and elephants too, so perhaps that isn’t actually helpful and I should put the nose bone away.

Well, still have the same issue, just found a work-around that is still a pain, but gets the job done.
And didn’t you say that you thought I shared too much?
I’m glad to hear that something worked out for you like that. I couldn’t ask for any better compliment!
Hi Wayne, feels like forever since I had some real time to blog! I know you can relate to that…
I see that the problem of adding links is a thing of the past. I just bookmarked the post “get indexed by these search engines” – couple of things within that post that I haven’t tried yet – Google Alerts being one.
This is another very helpful, easy to follow post Wayne! Thank you for sharing.
I also have to tell you that by my reading your blog, I was able to quickly think of a solution to part of a clients brief I was working on this week. I used the principals of what I learnt from the “sand box” post and created a private, invitation only blog where the client can share rosters, etc with volunteers. They were instantly impressed with the idea – being a community legal centre that runs on a low budget, they didn’t have the cash for a secure area to be built on their domain, and the blog is free! Ticks all boxes (so far – touch wood!)
I know that’s a bit off-topic for this post – but I had to share it here on your blog!! THANK YOU Wayne!

Hey very useful post meanwhile there is a basic thing which people miss here. Putting up lots of adsense unit doesn’t mean that your revenue will increase, it’s better to have one strong ad unit instead of 3 poor ad units..
This is well tried and tasted trick, moreover keep changing your adsense color every week, else your regular readers will get ad blindness…

One thing I do is to not display ads for the first few weeks a post is out. I decided to not bother my regular readers with any ads, since that is not why they come here, and I don’t want to try to make money from them. I just appreciate that they find some value in what I write.
After two weeks, the ads will show, and that is when I figure regular search engine traffic is starting to kick in. Otherwise, I would agree with you, and you are right saying so.
And I couldn’t agree more about the number of ads. It’s rather apparent what you’re after when you have three ad unit working for you.
Thanks for adding to the conversation Harsh, cheers!
