It happens to all of us, like it did me, one day we look down and see that we’re physically not who we want to be. We let ourselves go again. Yet with each passing day the only thing we do is think about how we should be doing something about it.
I used to be as guilty of inaction as anyone else. When you find yourself in that repeating pattern of inaction you might wonder if you’ll be able to break out of it, and if so, when?
I recall the days before I really started my effort to lose weight and how I would wonder what trigger would help me to break free and begin down the road of transforming my physical body into something I could be proud of and not be self-conscious of showing off. As those days would turn into weeks, then weeks into months, I found that I was not finding the motivation to make that big change for myself. It made me feel defeated and hopeless, and I really wondered if it was even worth it at all.
What I discover later on is that I was being incredibly negative. I filled my head with “So what” and “doesn’t matter”, when in fact it really did matter to me. I was simply being a bit immature and refusing to acknowledge that I was being lazy. I reinforced that laziness with negativity, even though deep inside, I really, really did want to do something about it.
Thankfully, I finally did break free, and after a few months of action I learned that I was only holding myself back. Of course, right? No one else was chaining me down, I just had to make that first move myself, for myself, and I’m glad that I did.
Since reaching the initial goals that I set for myself so long ago, I’m in maintenance mode and able to relax a little and not push myself so hard. It’s an awesome feeling to have reached my own personal goals and I want you to experience that same feeling, and you can if you really want it.
You’ll find below that I’ve compiled the top 10 things I’ve found we can do to inspire ourselves to help us find the motivation to start a weight loss routine for yourself, which in turn will help you transform your body into a healthy, fat-burning machine. Maybe one or more of these will be the finger in your side that you need to get you on the road to meeting your own goals. I know I needed it.
There’s no doubt that putting forth the effort is worth it. If you’re not routinely exercising and maintaining a healthy diet already, you can be. You can start today, and in the end, you’ll have
- Increased energy everyday
- Increased self-esteem
- Increased endurance and performance
- Better looking skin
- A sharper mind
- A happier disposition and elevated mood
- Better sleep
- Less health issues
- More control over your weight
- An increased desire to do more for yourself
“When you know what you want, and you want it bad enough, you will find a way to get it.” – Jim Rohn
The rewards are great, so it’s time to quit thinking about it and start doing something instead! We’re talking about transforming your life into what you want it to be, not what you simply accept it to be. Read the following items and find what works for you.
- Set a goal for yourself – Take some time to clear your mind and envision how you want your body to look. Don’t worry about how you might get there, I’ll help you with that in time. Simply make a clear picture of the body you want, and write it down so you can reflect on it from time to time and remember why you started. Maybe you want to lose 10 pounds, maybe 150 pounds. Maybe you want to finally achieve those wash-board abs (my current goal). By writing down your goals, you can plot a path and establish a target that you can make steps towards reaching each and every day.
- Push yourself through an exercise – Once you get those endorphins coursing through your body, they will provide you the “feel good” feeling that can help you make the next move, and the next one after that. There’s no doubt that to lose weight it helps to have some form of exercise in place, but the key is to make it something that you enjoy doing. Could be walking, could be running. Maybe it’s “mommy and me” time with baby while doing squats in front of the TV. Making it fun and being consistent is key to shedding pounds without even knowing it. Best of all, if you enjoy it, you won’t mind doing it.
- Start eating right – Eating right can’t be talked about enough. Since I began eating better, I’ve increased my daily energy, I lose weight without trying, my skin looks healthier, my cholesterol isn’t a problem anymore, and I feel like I’m doing something good for myself. Your body is no different than a machine in regards to the fuel you put in it. When you take those road trips, before you hit the freeway, you top off and then go! Breakfast is the start of your day, so filling up with the right food in the morning is so very important, and sets the pace for the rest of your day. Getting the right food in you, however, is the key here.
- Make yourself accountable to someone – Accountability to someone else can be encouraging. Often times if we know that we’ll have to report to someone on how we ate, or what we did through the day to get some exercise, we’re more likely to do it. As a health coach, I help over a dozen people by holding them accountable to their own goals that they’ve set. I get no greater satisfaction than hearing how absolutely fabulous they feel after a few weeks, and it’s because they are doing the right things, and holding themselves accountable.
- Ask others their honest opinion about your weight – It’s too easy to stand in front of the mirror and be critical about ourselves. If you ask a friend or two however, they are more likely to tell you exactly what you don’t want to hear about yourself, however it’s up to you to take that and make it your motivation for change. You can’t let the thoughts of others weigh on your mind and bring you down, you need to take that and do something about it. It’s the “I’ll show you” approach to motivation.
- Take a picture of yourself naked – Do you like what you see? Seeing yourself in the buff can be an incredible motivator for some people. Much like those stories you might have heard to help people curb their snacking by making them eat food while completely naked in a mirrored room. I don’t believe in that personally, but I do believe that we can look at ourselves in judgment and tell ourselves that we’re going to make changes so what we see in the mirror is exactly what we want to see.
- Speak to your doctor – Ask about the negative health effects of being obese or even slightly over-weight. Ask how it affects your internal organs, your skin, and most importantly your energy. This was another catalyst of mine. The doctor told me my cholesterol was starting to worry her and that I should do more cardiovascular exercises. That was all I needed and I ramped up the cardio efforts. My cholesterol is now in a healthy range, and I feel accomplished. You can do the exact same thing and get that big, positive win for yourself too. Just talk with your doctor and listen to them.
- Buddy up – Don’t think for a second that you’re the only one of your friends and family that is also looking for inspiration and a way to start losing pounds. Talk with those around you and see if you can buddy up with someone. By teaming up with someone and sharing a common goal you become accountable to each other, which in turn can be an incredible source of inspiration to keep going once you start!
- Find out the real reason why you want to lose weight – It’s too easy to say “I want to lose 20 pounds”, what’s the real reason for wanting to lose those 20 pounds? To fit into a new pair of jeans? To look good for your significant other?
- Read about the benefits of leading a healthy lifestyle and success stories of others – This works for me personally. Whenever I read about how others have transformed their lives into something they wanted to be, I take a look at myself and think “why haven’t I done that for myself too?” or “If they can do it, so can I!” The success stories of others who have achieved something that you personally want are a sure fire way to become inspired.
Feeling inspired now? Ready to make a change in your life and take back that energy and use it for more productive purposes? As far as anyone knows, you only get one pass through this wonderful world of ours, so make the most of it and be the best you can be while you have the opportunity. No one will make you do that, it’s all up to you.
There are probably many more ways to find the inspiration to lose weight and start leading a healthier lifestyle. I challenge you to find one and let everyone know in the comments below.

to checked my web site where i share how i lost 20 pounds in 2 weeks for sure. Let me know your opinion….
Thank’s

20 lbs in two weeks is quite a bit, but certainly do-able. My question is, how many people that lose that kind of weight gain it right back. IMHO, weight loss is not about losing weight, per se, but more about making changes to your habits so that weight just naturally falls off. When you change your habits to the point where you lose weight naturally, it won’t come back at all. Also, losing weight that quickly doesn’t give your skin time to react, and that’s when you get stretch marks and skin sagging all over you. Something no one really wants when they’re trying to improve their appearance and health, right? But, 20 pounds probably isn’t enough to be concerned like that. When you’re talking more though, you bet it is. That’s why I spent 2 years changing my habits and focusing on the long haul to only lose 55 pounds. I have one tiny little stretch mark, and that’s it. And, my skin isn’t sagging either, it’s pretty tight.
Your site looks nice, but the only thing I wonder is how do you support those that visit your site, if at all? Many of my tech readers will see exactly what you’re doing with ClickBank, and normally I wouldn’t approve comments like yours as it doesn’t seem genuine and more about simply promoting your site. Tell me I’m wrong, Dorothy.
Best of luck!

I always eat right but the problem I have is with setting goals. I always fail to keep up with the goals. I don’t know if this is means that I’m not putting in enough effort but I am.
Twitter: waynejohn
Hi Chris! Thanks for taking time to read and comment. I don’t know enough about you to be sure, but when people fail at their goals, it certainly could be because enough focus wasn’t given for a long enough period of time. More likely though, the goals were not specific enough, or were just too large and should have been made smaller, and more achievable. I always tell my health coaching clients that they should focus on one thing at a time. First, establish a routine with one thing, and after 4 to 6 weeks, add another change into the mix. Of course these changes should step one towards their goals.
We tend to want everything RIGHT NOW! It just doesn’t work that way. It might for some out there, but generally, when we take things one at a time and focus on small changes for a duration of time, those changes are more likely to stick with us and become part of our normal routine. Over time, we can reach our goals this way.
Maybe this is what you’re struggling with? If interested, I’d be happy to dig deeper into this with you one on one. Just hit me up!
Cheers!
Excellent advice! Thank you! I don’t have any problems with my weight, but I have many acquaintances who have it. And I will certainly share this information with them, because I find them very useful
Twitter: waynejohn
Sharing is caring, right? hahaha Thanks for your input, Jeanie!
Another very useful post from you.I would like to add that beside all these , a strong determination and faith is required.Very helpful tips. Thanks John.
Twitter: waynejohn
I like to think that we all can have that determination and we all can do whatever we set our minds to. Thanks Venus! (singing a song in my head now…

The common misconception is that you need to exercise like crazy to see any kind of results. The truth of the matter is that you really only need to stimulate your metabolism for 20 minutes to start seeing significant results. Try going for a 20 minute walk every day.
Twitter: waynejohn
Weight loss is 80% nutrition and 20% exercise. That means that exercise means very little to weight loss when compared to nutrition. I’ll be covering this in detail soon.
Thanks for your input, Namita!
Twitter: namita9797
i agree with you …
Hi John,
Wow, i never realised how much more important nutrition was as opposed to excersize. I’ve always struggled with my weight and it seems as though i’m just not eating the correct foods!
Thanks Wayne! Great info.
Michael
As for the motivation, I think that simply losing weight in order to look better is only a short term motivator and if it stays the main reason for doing it, it can actually do more harm than good in the long run.
First of all, people who want to lose weight usually want to do it right away and they shock their body and system with diets and exercises that are too much for them. Only to give up after two months of doing so. This is NOT GOOD for your heart and lost of other things.
You should do it because that amazing feeling that you are doing something good for yourself. When you go through that first phase of the beginner’s enthusiasm wearing off, you need to stick around and wait for the real pleasure of good routine to kick in. Once you gain that, eating and exercising properly won’t be a problem at all!
Twitter: waynejohn
I started with the primary goal of “looking good naked”. When I get up in the morning and see myself in the mirror, I would visualize what I would prefer to see, and I would take steps each and every day that would help me get there. It took time, but it paid off and now I can say I “look good naked”. Who cares how vain it sounds, it worked for me, and that’s what really matters. Finding what works for you as an individual and rolling with it.
Of course, along with that comes the feeling good and positive health impact, but I didn’t really focus on those items since they would simply happen as a result of my primary effort. I think as long as you have a goal and shoot for it and make a serious effort towards it each and every day, that’s better than nothing at all.
Great input, Ana! Thanks for taking time to share!
For me staying fit meaning working out and its always better if your training for something. Find something you like to do(for me its running or biking) and set a goal of doing well in an actual race in a certain amount of time. This is get you the motivation to train more than anything else.
Twitter: waynejohn
Dangling a carrot in front of me always works, why not others too, right? Great input Archbob!
Guys, listen to me. If you really want to lose weight that fast you must have the patience and the attitude. Self discipline is also important if you want to achieve your desired weight.
Twitter: waynejohn
I should add a ‘like’ button for comments like this. Patience and attitude is sooooo important. You have to want it. Really want it. There were plenty of times that I thought to myself “dig deep”, bring out the passion and make it happen today, I’ll worry about tomorrow when it comes, but right now, make it happen!
I do not think Wayne is really what it says about the percentage of 20 percent exercise and 80 percent nutrition.
From my own experience I can tell you that exercise matters at least 50 percent.
If only your weight loss diet is by eating and not exercising, you get to hate your own body fat because that will leave and you have long and ugly skins hanging from your body.
So my advice is to combine the two and you have a very beautiful and healthy body!
Twitter: waynejohn
Actually, you might be right for yourself, but as a general rule, if you don’t have the nutrition, your exercise efforts are not going to be as effective, especially over the long haul. IMO, this is why people plateau and begin to believe they can’t make further progress.
See this also: http://fatamericafitamerica.com/2011/01/01/the-8020-rule-of-fitness-nutrition/ or http://www.twopeasinabucket.com/mb.asp?cmd=display&thread_id=3119414 – The overall consensus is that about 80% of weight loss IS in fact nutrition. I’ve experienced this myself first-hand.
Wayne – Good advice, especially since we are approaching the overeating time of the year. Thanksgiving through the New Year is always a killer for me, everything looks and tastes so good.
When it comes to weight loss, diet (or nutrition) trumps exercise every time as far as I am concerned, but when exercise is combined with sensible eating something tremendous happens.
Losing 20 lbs in two weeks is not recommended, the only way to achieve that is by not eating. Food is one of the great pleasure of life and even if on a diet there is a lot of great meals you can prepare which satisfy the palate and meet your goals.
Twitter: waynejohn
Ah yeah, the holiday season. Ya know what’s funny, I went on vacation to the Caribbean earlier this year and came back 10 pounds lighter. That’s unheard of as far as vacations go, right? I found that the place we stayed at served up some really healthy food, lots of fruits and vege’s, and of course there were some things that weren’t so healthy, but the overall net effect for me was 10 pounds less of me returned home. That was an incredible thing to happen to me, because normally, you know what happens.
Just like this time of year coming up. Can’t wait to see what happens, and I can’t believe it’s already upon us! Sigh, where’d the year go!?!?!
Twitter: easyPblog
Hi Wayne
I don’t diet any more I lift weights.
Simple principle is that if you put on a little muscle, the muscle helps you burn calories and you start to firm up.
Worked for me and I’m sure it would work for you.
Great to see you in such a positive frame of mind.
Even got a new avatar on twitter.
Good man.
Twitter: waynejohn
Ah yeah, when you reach that point where your body is tuned up and a fat burning machine, you can do that. I’m at that point as well where I’m not trying to lose more weight, but instead transition the remaining fat into muscle, and maintaining the same weight. So far, so good.
I wouldn’t leave cardio behind though. I’m still a smoker (working on that…believe me, I’m working on that…) so keeping up with my cardio is important still for the endurance aspects of fitness.
It’s awesome to have left all that negativity behind me, thanks Keith!
Twitter: iamabdus
Hey Wayne, thanks for nice advice. Every time I make a plan to continue exercise and each time it fails. But I liked most the point “Start Eating Right”. I am going to follow this from now
Twitter: waynejohn
Keep your goals easy to achieve at first, and allow yourself at least 4 to 6 weeks to make those changes permanent. I liked the latest from Zen master Leo: http://zenhabits.net/1/ – Really drives that point home.
If anything, don’t ever stop trying!
Great article. I like your sensual style of writing. Problem with me is I work out but I have college and a wife and my blog. it’s hard to fit everything in and then the gym so i go twice a week
Twitter: waynejohn
30 minutes is all it takes, and I’d put your health above your blog, if I were you. I did, and I’m still here and kicking.
Sensual?
My motivation to keep healthy and to exercise is to care for myself, so I can be more caring towards my family.
During the months I stopped running because I thought my weight was okay and that I was too busy, I could observe myself becoming more negative and a less pleasant to be around with.
So each morning, I get up fast, and change into my shorts, and run outside even when it’s raining.
Twitter: waynejohn
The attitude change was something I needed desperately too. I found that my negativity slowly left me when I began to work out and eat right. Heh, I muddled up my social streams with my negativity, and it adversely affected me on those services too. Trying to repair that a bit now.
Great post Wayne, I’m trying to find the motivation to get to the gym three times a week and these tips are great. I’ve tried setting goals before but I think getting a friend to workout with me will help push me to start working out as often as I should. The problem with that is finding the right person to team up with.
Twitter: waynejohn
Hi Melony, thanks for taking time to comment. I know at the beginning, I had my ups and downs, and several periods where motivation just wasn’t there. The key for me, and maybe for you, was for me to continually dwell on it until it became habit. Of course, I’ve been dwelling on quitting smoking for over two years now, but that’s my next challenge now that I have the exercise and nutrition working for me. If you could workout one day a week, and make that stick, add another day after that. Then another, and another. Maybe trying to slowly modify your lifestyle will work.
Stay tuned, I’ll have much more to share and perhaps something that I put out there will be the catalyst you need? Who knows, thing is, keep trying and never give up. The benefits are just too incredible to simply give up on. I think you know that already!
Twitter: eukhostltd
@Wayne, well, I tool have a family including my Mom/Dad, and its a bit hard to manage everything. In daytime I work in a company and a part time blogger for eUKhost. I don’t get much time to concentrate on my health. What I am able to do is some relaxation techniques. If you could suggest me something that will maintain my health without affecting my work, it would be great.
Twitter: waynejohn
The thing about work is that it will always be there, in one form or another. Your health however, isn’t always that guaranteed so taking care of it is highly important.
Maybe if you thought about it in terms of time. There are 24 hours in a day, can you give 20-30 minutes each day to do something positive for yourself, and your family? They probably rely on you to some extent, so taking care of yourself should be your first priority so you can take care of them. Not only that, but when they see you taking care of yourself, they might be so inclined to take care of themselves as well. A healthy lifestyle can be contagious, as has happened in my own household, and I’ve seen it in others too.
In the coming months, I plan on sharing everything I know and have learned that has transformed my life into something I wish I would have done so many years ago. Keep in touch and catch the articles I have coming out. If you want more of a one on one type of help, I’m more than willing to spend some time with you to help inspire or find ways to help you lead a healthier life. Just let me know!

While I am not trying to lose weight, I agree with your motivations and with Jim Rohn’s quote being applied to every area of our lives. Nice post, John.
I really love this post. Thanks you wayne. This post really motivates me.wish me luck.

I try a lot but I could not effectively loose my weight.
I drink a lot of water, I do joggings, I exercise, but I do not know why I am not able to decrease my weight.
Twitter: waynejohn
Nutrition?
I’m doing the opposite Wayne. I am not into weight loss. I’m into weight gain. I feel not confident with my body build. But as you have said from your tips above, I can be. And I should start now. I started it several years ago but there is no consistency and I am losing my patience. Thanks for the motivation Wayne. I should get back!
My favorite is point 9.Its indeed important to have a reason for wanting to achieve something. The reason turns out to be a great motivator.
Thanks for the post.

A lot of people actually want’s to stay fit by losing weight, however, the problem is that they lack proper motivation to pursue their plan of going to gym or doing some routine exercises. After reading this articles I think many people will be more inspired and motivated of starting a weight loss routine.
I definitely agree with this blog post, the main attributes to weight loss are lifestyle, food choices and exercise. One of the things I feel people over look is walking, when we talk about exercise. Lots of people do not even walk a mile a day.
All it takes is the good doc giving you a diagnosis that weight loss can help with and suddenly you are motivated. But it still is challenging and the points you provided are helpful.
Good information. I’m goal oriented so setting goals and then having a buddy to be accountable to is helpful.
all the above mentined tips will work even a single tip will work but it only needs strong will power and inspiration. my friend in delhi lost 20 kg in 6 months by controlling food habits and regularly exercise.
For someone who has always been overweight, I can safely say that the best way to get inspired is to be around people that are also beginning a weight loss regimen. Funny story, I really got motivated to get fit when I visited Hawaii and saw how incredibly fit everyone was. So, when I got back to town, I formed a support group with a few friends and had better success than I had had in other failed attempts!
Like so man others, I start out the NEW year with the goal of loosing weight. I do pretty well for about a month and then it’s back to the “USUAL”.
For many loosing weight is equivalent to those that are try to quit smoking, it’s flat out DIFFICULT.
I appreciate the tips and your success story.

Jim rohn is the best!! And your 10 steps to loose weight are also very good!! Thank you very much, i’m going to try to do it and loose 20kg of weight, have to start someday, i think i’m going to start today!!
The key for me was to start eating right (as in point 2) and the way I did that was to cut ALL sugar from my diet. Other than that, I just eat what I like, and as much as I like. The funny thing is that after a short while I found my appetite reduced to ‘normal’ levels whereas before when I was eating sugar I seemed to be permanently hungry and always on the look out for the next snack!
The result was that I lost 14 pounds in 5 months, and what’s even better is that a year later I haven’t put any of that weight back on. I’m now a sensible weight (5ft 5in and 8st 4lb), feel much healthier, plus I’m generally a lot happier and less anxious about the things that used to really irritate me.
My next goal is to step up the exercise to get a bit fitter.
Twitter: webcircle
Hi Wayne, nice post, my wife has just lost 28 pounds and she has never been happier. I’ve been so encouraged by her results that I’ve decided to try to put on 28 pounds. I’m doing most of what you suggest above except instead of eating less I’m obviously eating a lot more. A huge part of it for me is motivation so I find doing exercises that you enjoy and getting the right setup etc and environment for you to work out in is critical.
Thanks
Dan

Very inspiring and motivating post John. In order to stay fit we need to avoid vices also. Because alcohol can cause gaining of weight. You should have right mindset and right attitude in loosing weight.
what you need here is control, even though you were always in gym but you didn’t have control on your appetite, that would be just a waste.

Follow these steps to start weight loss routine. I’ve tried it it was very good experience to try out with these steps, just follow you will obtain.
I’m into the other way around. Instead of losing, I’m up to gaining weight. But I’ve found your tips very applicable to mine. I haven’t tried some of your tips because of some depressing reasons and I’m lack of motivation to do so. Thanks for sharing your kind words, I think I’ll try tip #4 & #6 to keep myself going. Wish me luck! Thanks!
I worked for many years as a personal trainer so I know first hand just how important motivation is in any fitness program. The best motivation is when the person simply wants to take care of themselves and improve their life
Many peoples need read this post, is very motivated for who want loss weight. Thank you for create and sharing this text. =)

Over weight is a common issues among all the people having a job which doesn’t require much movement of body. still people used to ignore without thinking much about its effect in future health after 40 or 50. We must start to take care of these tings at young age.
I’m wasn’t overweight by any means but I was unhappy with my body because I wasn’t toned enough for my liking. I have a very fast metabolism and I used to eat a lot of carb-heavy foods like pasta and potatoes. One morning, I just woke up and thought, I don’t want to eat that stuff any more. Now, I eat lots of chicken and fish, vegetables, fruit and exercise five times a week on my elliptical trainer. I’ve noticed a significant decrease in my body fat and I’ve nearly reached my goal measurements ^_^.
Great tips! I may just add that it’s also important to find an inspiration first before engaging on any weight loss plan. You see, many people want to lose weight. Thing is, they don’t have enough drive to stick to their objectives (considering all the temptations of eating unhealthy foods). For me, it helped that I check out posters or catalogs of celebrities with ideal bodies. These prints kept me motivated to achieve my goal. In the end, I managed to lose utmost 20 pounds!
I was doing so well until I tore a ligament in my ankle. Now I can’t exercise until it’s healed… Why me?
I think that if you really want to lose weight that bad, you’ll just suck it up and start exercising. I power walk to and from work everyday and that burns off just over 100 calories a day.
Twitter: spinxweb
I always think that I am going to do some activity which improve my physical health, but next day it all goes same way as before. it is very hard for me to maintain the body and exercise daily to control over weight.

Hi
.
In addition to watching what one eats, I think for a diet and the weight loss to be sustainable, one should also partake in regular exercise to maintain and increase general fitness and increase metabolism. Otherwise once the diet is over and you resume normal eating you will most likely put the weight back on
Have a wonderful day

Great writing. Very inspiring, today is my first day working towards my goal to lose 30 lbs. Thanks for the tips I am very appreciative.
Working in an office all day means I’m sat down most of the time so I take every opportunity I can get to get some exercise in and out of work hours. Instead of taking the bus into town, I walk there and back and in my morning and afternoon breaks, I go for a brisk ten minute walk and in my lunch break, I’ll eat my lunch then go for a fifteen minute walk. It’s worked wonders for me, I feel great!
Some people need to be inspired just to get going with their workout routine. I like all your tips.
Thanks!
